Reeferhead's 150DD Build

I'm now 0-2 with those Azoo Quad fans. I have one in the hood and one in the sump. Both went out on me in about 2-3 month. Luckily the AC/DC converter was the problem and not the fans themseves, so... $5 fix

Make sure they are not too close where they can pick up ANY salt spray. The individual fan circuit boards are not protected in any way. I had a set on my sump where the wires from the power switch to the fan corroded on 3 of the fans. I recently re-stripped and soldered the connections for use on my 29G. Wasn't hard, just a PITA.

I just use PC fans from Newegg.com Had the same 2 in my canopy for 2 years now. Cost about 3 bucks a piece.

I think that's pretty unavoidable under the hood. Mine sit only a few inches from the water line and quite near the return. One would think they were designed for this type on environment correct??? Are there any better options out there?

I'm using some really awesome ultra quiet German made PC fans in my 60 gallon but I need something much slimmer for the 150. The Azoo four fan array is the perfect size. Is there anything out there like it but more durable?

They make case fans in alot of shapes and sizes. I think Newegg has about the best selection and give you the dimensions of the fans I believe. My 2 case fans sit about 2" of the water, but not near the return so I really don't have much salt spray.

They also display each fan's decibel rating.

heat rises. best option is enclosed canopy with slots on the sides and high CFM fans on top. (cool air in/hot air out). They make pretty nice CFL fans with LOW dBs. I'll see if I can find one online.

In my setup, I use 6 T5 bulbs, in order to get maximum par, and cool the bulbs both of my fans intake air. I have a large hole drilled on the top of the canopy, so it pushes the hot air.

I've done lots of research into PC case fans in the past and I love the NB-Multiframe PC fans I'm using on the 60. I just don't want to mess with it on the 150. Its hard to describe the issue but its not the best option for this application. I would really prefer an all-in-one array. Right now the Azoos are running, so as long as they stay that way I'll be alright. If anyone else is using a different brand array please let me know.

I am putting together the same tank here in a few weeks when I get home off of deployment. I am thinking of modifying the canopy to have the fans blowing down from the top and out the open back. Rapidled sells different assessories to link them together as well as frozencpu

The two new wrasses are doing great. It took a awhile to acclimate them. When I first released them from the breeders boxes almost every fish in the tank attacked them relentlessly. So. I recaptured them and left them in the boxes for a few more days. Then, rather than removing the boxes completely I placed them on the bottom and just slightly opened the lids. This allowed the new fish to leave on their own and provided a familiar refuge when needed. The tangs, hawkfish, and other wrasse still attacked them for a few days but the new fish were able to escape to their boxes and pvc pipes thus limiting the stress of the introduction. After a couple weeks everyone was happy and I removed the boxes.

I also mounted a bunch of frags that came out of QT a month ago. Thanks Nook! I don't have any decent pics but did take a video with my Iphone. Its not great but will give you an idea of where I'm at.

I hope your mission is going well. You could mount them on top but heat naturally rises, so you would be unnecessarily fighting physics ;)

Ok, so now I'm getting a bit worried. My McCoskers is now missing. So that's two wrasses now that were doing fabulous for about a month a piece and then just up and disappeared? I'm really confused by this.

I’m wondering if my tank is lacking enough hiding/sleeping spots and something is going on at night that I’m not seeing. Any ideas?

I've had the same thing happen in my tank. I believe it was either my large emerald crab, pistol shrimp, or serpent star. I've removed two out of three hoping I don't lose anymore fish.

I have a small serpent star but he and my yellow watchman goby practically sleep together so I have never suspected him. Should I?

i blame my serpant star for a green chromis, small clown, flasher wrasse, and a clown goby. never saw it eat them but did see it fit a piece of silverside into it's mouth the size of the wrasse. it stole the silverside from my anenome, i could see the whole outline of the fish through the skin of the star, it just kept forcing it in. i couldn't believe it.

It’s possible I suppose but my serpent is small (oral disk about the size of a dime). Also, I'm not kidding when I say that the YWG and starfish practically "snuggle." They have been living together under the same rock for months. If my serpent is a killer than the Goby must be an accomplice.
