ReefLux 10K MH Blub?

You know, I never stopped to ask if these reeflux 10k/s were shielded or not? I am running my rig with 2x175w MH 10k XMs (with a 250w 10K XM in the center currently off due to overkill in my 6 ft-130 gal setup - also open faced) over open surface nothing between the lamp and water...everything seems to be in order, but what SHOULD I be doing?.....its like jumping then remembering you needed a parachute....

Just bought a DE reflector for the 250 in the center b/c I want more blue.....was gonna slam a reeflux 250w 12K in that bad boy so that I can get rid of my 4x96w VHO actnics

Single ended (Mogul) bulbs do not need to be shielded, double ended (HQI) bulbs do. I use mogul bulbs about 8 inches above the water unshielded and have never had a problem in 3.5 years. I suppose there is always that chance but I hate cleaning salt spray off of glass all the time.

Thanks AZDest. I am about to order 2-175w Reeflux 12k's and 1 250 12k reeflux, all SE right away. Will keep you posted.

I will buy the 1oK's instead.....If I need to kick it up in the blue area, I will turn on my 4x96w VHO super actinics....

Do it!!! You won't regret it and it is one of the cheapest bulb you can get. I'm not too sure why but it made 4 of my SPS have blue tips when they were never blue tip. I run them on Icecap 250 with some T5 supplements and I love it.

DONE MAN DONE!!!!! i feel like a virgin at the prom....I gots goose bumpy thingys:bigeyes:

I am really happy with the way some of my SPS is coloring up. I am seeing blues and purples I never saw with either the XM or Ushio 10K bulbs.

N_V_S, I am running the 10K 250DE Reeflux bulbs on Coralvue ballasts and am pretty happy with them. It's really in the eye of the beholder though. As some here think they are blue, to me they are not quite blue enough. I may switch out to the 12Ks next time.

I'm running both the REEFLUX 10K and a USHIO 14K.
USHIO by far is the nicer lamp. the REEFLUX is fine but just slightly on the pink side and a tad dimmer.
the 14k USHIO is the best lamp I've used so far [I've try'd lots]
all 400w lamps on both EL and TAR ballasts.mild actinics.

XM 10K's not matter how you slice it are yellow and need a ton of actinics.

Yeah the bulbs themselves doesn't give a nice blue look to the tank but it brings the blue out of the corals, if that makes sense. here are some pics for you to see.

gabe3d - what type of ballast are you using?

I am running my Reeflux bulbs off of Icecap 250 ballasts.
