Reeflux 12K

Eric -

When you came by, the lights on my reef are 250 watt 12K Reeflux DE run on HQI ballasts. The FOWLR has 175 watt 10K Reeflux SE driven with standard M57 magnetics. The prop tank has a single 250 watt Reeflux 10k SE.

What I have seen:

The DE 250s on HQI took a week or two to burn in. On HQI they are much whiter than on yznhmr's prop tank (he runs elecronic ballasts). Same bulb, less blue on HQI.

The SE 10k over the prop is very white. I was expecting more blue out of it with the electronic ballast, but I like it just the same.

The 10Ks over the FOWLR run on the blue side with the M57 ballasts. I tried the 12ks and found them too blue for just fish (might not be bad for corals though as the blue spectrum penetrates water to a greater depth), but I thought that was just because they were 175 watt. I switched in the 10ks and still don't run the actinics.

My advice:

Give them another week, if you still don't like the color sell them to ostrow and buy the 10Ks.

Another option would be to switch your VHO actinics to 50/50s. That should provide a nice blend of color. I have a couple of older 50/50s sitting in the garage if you'd like to try that (I just have to pull them out of the hood they are in).

Every time I have switched lights - from PC to 14K MH, to 10K XM, to 14K Phoenix - I have been unhappy with the lights at first. However, after a week or two, either I get used to the color or they slightly change. Give it a little time and I bet you'll like them. If not, try running them without the VHO's on at the same time, or try running white VHO's instead of actinics.

I am running 250 DE Phoenix 14Ks now off two BlueWave IV's, which are built with a PFO electronic ballast. It's about time for replacement. Does anyone have experience with both the Phoenix 14K vs the Reeflux 12K?

Eric - I plan on only running mine for 9-10 months being that they are being overdriven on the HQI ballast. If they weren't being overdriven, then personally I'd give 'em 11-12 months.

Naperville Reef - I really like the way that starboard (I'm assuming) looks in your tank. Makes it very tempting to try a BB reef.

at least partially on yznhmr's recommendation after getting some frags from him, i replaced one of my xm 20k's with a reeflux 12k. At first it's color seemed nearly identical to the xm... now, after a month or so, it's a bit whiter, but still somewhat blue.

It hasn't been long enough for me to say it's helping alot growth/color wise, but it certainly hasn't gotten any worse. Actually the color seems perfect to me. I was running a couple small 6500k CF's just to even out the color from the xm 20k's. When i get 2 reeflux in there i may get rid of those...

ken

oh, and they are on pfo electronic ballast.

hey all....nice thread, guess i should have looked here first...:D

I just put a 175w-12K reeflux on my 22g prop tank...ugh :(
WAY TOO BLUE FOR ME....seems like its half the light as my XM-10K I had going. I run a IceCap E-Ballast with reefopix reflector.
From what everyone is saying i should wait a week to see if it turns more white, then its a week old....personally id rather go with the WHITE light.

anyone interested in this bulb? 2 hours use last night....
I'm heading back to the XM-10K....i'm fond of the WHITE light!

$55 shipped or $50 pick up....Paid $58 on Monday for it!

So I'm definitely needing to replace my Phoenix 14K 250 DE and have thought about the 12K Reeflux. Anyone done that switch or have experience with both? I've been happy with the Phoenix, but am curious how these stack up?

I used to use the Phoenix, much happier with the 12K Reeflux. I have a 250W DE w/ HQI ballast.

I thought the Phoenix looked great from far away, but when I got close to the tank, my corals looked blury, not clear. The Reeflux is very crisp w/ a tint of blue.
