Refractometer

Well, I got my refractometer today.... Turns out my hydrometer was off by .005. I was running my tanks at 1.026 not too bad, but is a waste of good salt. At least I was getting good skimming!

Anybody else get their refractors in?

Tanks to Reefkeeps and the rest of you for "talking" me into it.
 
Who did you order yours from? I ordered mine the night reefkeeps mentioned it from dr. fosters....Fedex tracking claims I'll be getting to today(saturday) but the day is winding down and no refractometer yet....
 
I ordered from Drs F&S the same day as you. I checked my e-mail, and tracking said it was delivered at 2:35 p.m. today. I sent my wife to the front door, and there it was! FedEx didn't even knock! LOL! You should get it today.
 
Yeah, I was surprised it was delivered today. I figured it would be Monday. Now if the U.S. mail would come before 5:00 THAT would be a miracle!
 
So imagine if your target had been 1.025, w/ the .005 error you would have been on the extreme end then....I think I spent about $40 on mine too, and think it's money well spent. After all most of us spend so much more than that on LR and corals.....

I always try to target 1.021-1.022 with the old hydrometer, to account for temperature error. But, your right, if I was really at 1.026, then after evaporation.......
 
Once I started using a refractometer I started targeting for 1.025-1.026, it stays pretty consistant as long as I make sure to replace evaporation..

It's a great piece of equiptment to have for your reef, and in the long run the cost is more than worth it.....Mine from the DR....was already calibrated when checked against my fresh ro/di. Money well spent :)
 
Ok, you guys are killing a poor, injured noob here.

I've used nothing but a "used" hydrometer since day 1 when I started this hobby. One month later was almost killed. Now, Still pinching pennies and you guys got me all worried about my SG.

I just ordered the one from DRs F&S. :rolleyes:
 
LOL! I sent to my wife to Publix to get a gallon of distilled. She was peeved when I told her I only needed 3 drops!

I went and lowered the salinity back down to 1.025, so I think I will keep it there for awhile.

LOL! You sound like me. My hydrometer is almost 20 years old, and never gave it a second thought. I was starting to become paranoid about the SG! I'm glad that I know what it is now without a doubt.
 
Any truth to keeping the salinity up can stunt or slow down the growth of nuisance algae? I thought I read that somewhere.
 
Just a little update....I FINALLY got my refractometer that night at 8:30pm!!!!! So when I got home from the truck show it was at my doorstep marked 8:30pm!!

Anyhoo, my $12 coralife (newer model after the 'deep six') was right on the money! 1.026

BUT my older deep six model were bad bad bad...1.021 compared to 1.026

Overall, I am VERY happy with my purchase....SOO nice and easy....thats for 'twisting my arm' on that purchase ')

Also, forgot to mention....my polyfilter still remains white....and since doing the back to back water changes I'm getting very little production out of my skimmer...seems like theres very little to skim which I assume is a good guage of decent water.....my algae persists although =(
 
One thought about your rust theory Jameyh. Isn't phosphate remover ferous oxide (rust). I would think that rust might not be as harmful as you hypothesized.
 
Well, theres no more rusty rock, so yes I think we''ve moved on from that theroy...C'mon Ben, keep up! Dave's perculas comments have clouded your thinking ;)

Anyways ferrous oxide is iron oxide rather than rust...
 
Well theres got to be SOME difference between ferrous oxide and iron oxide...

anyways I like rust....it brings out the oranges in my tank ;)
