Refresh my memory...sugar dosing

It has been a while since I've read about sugar dosing or even mentioned it! Are there any guidelines to using it on a daily basis? I talked to someone over a year ago who says he uses X amount of brown sugar each day, everyday. He had only good things to say about it, as well as the norm of weaning off of it if use is to be discontinued.

I've generally heard of poorer results with sugar dosing than other organic carbon sources, such as vinegar or vodka. So I'd suggest steering away from sugar unless there is a specific reason you want to use it.

Randy, its is actually for a take over account not my own private aquarium. Done just about everything to rectify the algae problem. I do not think a refugium is possible. I upgraded the filtration system, skimmer that actually works, replaced the substrate as it has been running for years and has a lot of organics throughout it, running carbon and ferric oxide. The owner has a heavy feeding hand and does not cease to ease up. The yellow ting in the water column did not go away until after this whole upgrade from. PO4 is lower but always lingering. Nitrates non detectable. Was hoping sugar may be a little easier to use saying add x amount each day.

I'd personally use vinegar or vodka (well, I do use them :D ), but the sugar may work out OK. There are lots of threads in the chemistry forum on different organics that people use. The list is rather long.

Apparantly, denitrification bacteria as a group can use many different kinds of organic carbon, but I don't know if a certain species can use different organics, or if there is a definite species-type of organics relation

In wastewater plants, one way to include organics is to feed the digesters or other anerobic processes with raw sewage that contains organics.

BTW my candy cane stayed closed up when I tried AZNO3 to lower the nitrates - contains sugar I believe. It was fine with the vodka though
