Healthy tank! 4 mo old. Nitrates can't seem to get consistently below 5. Went quick with live stock and got lucky I only had one ammonia spike once resolved and one small red gianopora died but since everything else Alive. Anyway I kinda just want the fuge for fun too. Will it help buffer my tank a bit (not ph buffer. I mean buffer in sense that it allows me some more room to let things go off parameters before stuff dies)

Well.. yes..any time you increase water volume you essential have a larger "buffer" as you call it..

However your tank is still new and "maturing".. I find that after the 6-8 month mark that maintaining low nitrates,etc.. gets easier as you have a more established/mature bacterial population,etc...

So will it help.. sure.. is it going to be a noticeable difference.. probably not..

And good luck with the green goni.. In general the red/pink are a bit easier to maintain long term..
Green in many tanks seem to do ok for a while then just give up the ghost..

I hear ya. Like I said though the red gionopora is the one who died during my initial cycle and ammonia spike but green one pulled thru and now 4 mo into tank life it's thriving!

A refugium will help with nitrates, but the tank is also new and needs more time to adjust.
Also, that tang does not belong in a 23 gallon tank

+1 on the tang. I hate to be the tang police on this one but sell or trade for credit to the LFS... it is not fair to the fish for it to be stuck in a tank that is incredibly too small for it.
