Refugium ideas

Dr. Ron,

I currently have a berlin turbo skimmer, and its about 1 year old its in a 20 gallon sump under my 90 gallon. I clean the skimmer monthly, and it doesnt seem to work very well, and doesnt fractionate well.. My corals are all doing great and growing. With that said, would it be better for me turn to turn my 20 gallon sump area into a refugium since my tank is doing well w/ out a skimmer? The skimmers been turned off for a month, lol

90 gallon-150 pounds of pourous L-rock - medium depth sand bed, needs more, but I'm affriad If add more sand it will acclimate on top of my corals.

It sounds like my best bet would convert it into a fuge??

N03, alk, ph all test well weekly

tank is about 3 years old

Sounds to me like your best bet would be to get a good skimmer and use it.

The accumulation of toxic materials and excess nutrients takes some time. Once it occurs, however, it is almost impossible to control easily.

Diligent skimming is probably the best way to go.
