Refugium in rear chamber?

Hi im looking into starting a refugium in the rear chamber of my fluval m60. I was wondering since my return is in 3rd chamber skimmer in middle would it be ok to put it in the 1st (where the water from dt overflows) and would it be wise to put it before the skimmer? Thanks in advance.

I prefer my refugiums after the skimmer so that any macro algae that breaks off does not clog the intake of the skimmer, but there no major problem with having the skimmer after the refugium.
