Refugium Light

What are you all using for your fuge light and how long do you keep it on? I am trying to successfully grow cheato

I have one of those clip on lights with the metal reflector thing. I use a CFL spot light bulb. They have them at homedepot/lowes/ace and the package says plant grow or something like that. I set the light to come on when the main display is off. I found it grows better if it has kind of a tumbling current. Bifferwine has some of the best growing chaeto I have seen. I believe she runs a 24/7 light but im not sure. Hopefully she will comment.

Why thank you for the compliment! I wish I could grow corals as well as I grow algae, hahaha.

I run my fuge lights 24/7. I use two CFL (squiggly) bulbs (23 watts each) in a clamp-on shop light from Lowe's. I've tried using plant bulbs and T5 bulbs, but the regular cheapo CFLs that you'd buy to light your house seem to work the best for me. And, I've been running them 24/7 for nearly a year and haven't had to replace a bulb yet.

Here is a pic of my equipment area, with the fuge on the left.

That will work, thanks ALL. Bifferwine how fast does that cheato grow?

Super fast. Fast enough for me to sell it on Ebay and make $200 to $400 profit a month and still not run out of it.

Your corals look awesome too. Did you ever get your clowns to lay more eggs for ya?

Thanks! I have TONS more corals now. I'm out of space in my tank. I recently got a DSLR camera so I should post some pics. The clowns did start laying eggs again, and have consistently for a few months now. I am still ****ed at them, so I ignore the eggs and let them get eaten.

Yes, post some pics I would love to see it.

If you try to raise a batch please share your experiences.

this is Andy using Leilani's log in, I need to get my own

nobody mentioned Kelvin rating, what do you like?
we replaced our 5600K 18W CFLs which are full daylight spectrum blueish looking
with 4 - 2600K 23W clip-on CFLs that are more yellow-greenish looking
per Santa Monica's suggestion for driving the Algal Turf Scrubber (0 Nitrates)
chaeto grows well under this light
with the change in K, from 2 to 4 lights, & 18 hr sched, chaeto doubled in a months time

we have noticed it sommetimes turning white on the water surface, I suspected it was caused by putting the DI top-off water directly on the chaeto,
we removed some but I dont think it was deadWe rotated it & it seemed to do green up,
deeper is greener?
Has anyone else seen chaeto go white(r)?

copepods went nuts, many many, some quite large
we raised some brine shrimp from eggs & released them in fuge & now we have a self-sustaining population of sea monkeys

mangroves have been very slow to sprout, maybe because we kept moving them
we have 2 of four finally sporting a pair of leaves & new shoots

Were you joking about selling your cheato on ebay? For a profit???

No, I'm serious. Search for it on Ebay. It goes for big bucks (for what's basically a weed). A lot of people can't get it from LFSs in their area, so they have to get it online. Most of the corals and fish in my tank were purchased using money I made from selling my chaeto.

That is soooo cool. You've found that almost thermodynamically impossible thing - a self-sustaining hobby. Good for you:thumbsup:
