Refugium question - Help please

I have space issues in my sump. How narrow can a 10 inch wide refugium space be and still be at all useful? What would YOU put in it?

As wide as you can make it.
I'd go w/ chaeto and maybe a little LR rubble.

You think it makes sense even if it is only 4 inches wide?

I wouldn't put a ton of effort into it.
It is pretty small, but I had a aquaclear110 that I used for a fuge a while back.
I was able to keep a bit of chaeto in it.
Every little bit does help.
Can you increase your sump?
Maybe a HO fuge would work for you.

Should I make the return pump external?

I had space issues and used a two tank solution, its working great. Fuge is a 5G hex tank.
