Refugium Question

So I have this cold water coral tank full of sps corals that I was just put in charge of that is approximately 40 gallons in a lab I work in. The tank consistently gets over run with algae. I was thinking of setting up a macro algae refugium with it to soak up some of the nutrients. The one thing that is keeping me from doing this is im not quite sure I understand how the pumps would work and what would keep the tank from over flowing.

I was thinking of setting up the refugium beneath the coral tank. obviously I would need a return pump to get the water back up to the main tank but whats the common method for getting the water down to the refugium? Is it siphoned down to it? if so what would keep it from overflowing?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

never mind I Figured it out. If I drill a hole in the desired water level on the coral tank it will only send overflowing water down to the refugium thereby maintaining the water level.

Sure thing. Its just a tank holding some cold water corals for research in the future. I'll have a pic later today for you.
