Refugium question

Do you need baffles in your refugium? I was told by my LFS that I can just my 20g into a refugium by simply having an intake/return simply without having to deal with baffles. He states that if my intake is not fast, then bubbles would be a min. and I can just have a mag 5 sit on top of the sand for the return. My questions is what is the advantage that I see besides minimizing bubbles with baffles?

I also found this on ebay, anyone heard anything about it?
