Refugium substrate

My first refugium (first tank had a wet/dry) and just curious what everyone recommends for substrate in a refugium in a FOWLR "Aggressive Tank". The tank is 240 (8x2x2) and is currently cycleing. I have 120 lbs of live sand, 40 lbs of CC, and about 140 lbs of LR....I know I know, I should have more LR, what can I say, I like an open tank, I can of course add more later. Is "miracle mud" or similar the way to go? or just go with live sand. I will have some rock down there too, and chaeto I hope....Thanks.

I'm a big fan of argonite, it is a great natural ph buffer for your tank. But it really depends on what you have as a fuge, personally I wouldn't put any substrate in your fuge. So you don't have to worry about stuff blowing around. Getting in your pumps ect.

I don't use any substrate in the refugium. The chaetomorpha provides adequate habitat for the microfuana.

I have a 4 inch dsb using oolitic aragonite sand and miracle mud in my fuge. I put a plexiglass partition between the sand and the miracle mud, that way I can change out 50% of the mud every year as recommened by the manufacter. Does the mud works, can't say for sure but it not hurting anything. I know at least it adding minerals and trace elements and also a denitritfier. I also use chateomorpha in my fuge. This is what I got set up on my reef tank. I just set up a FOWLR tank 5 weeks ago today and I will be setting up a fuge for it just like one for my reef.
