Refugium

Looking to start a refugium in my sump. Currently in my refugium section that's (10Lx11Wx7inch water level)I have 2 gallons of marinepure 1 1/2 inch spheres. I'm looking to start growing chaeto with a big pod population. Any one have an suggestions or guide lines that I should follow when growing cheato. Here's a few questions. What's a reliable not to expensive light that will hang from my 1/4 inch sump. There's not much algae growth down there at the moment is that ok? Is it required to have small pump to produce flow or will the flow in my sump be good enough. Pictures attached so you can feel my setup. Thanks in advanced

My fuge has just LR rubble and chaeto, some people even forgo the rubble and just have chaeto.
best is for that chaeto to tumble, sometimes just your return flow handles that, but in my case I added a small hobby pump aimed up to help create that tumbling flow.
For my light I've for years now used a home depot dome shop light, and now they make those out of ABS plastic, cheap and easy and no rusting parts.
I use a LED floodlight in the 5-65k range, but even a regular flood in that range will work
If those spheres are bioballs I would not use them
Looks like pic did not attach

Yes they are bio balls. Is there a reason not to use I thought thoes were super beneficial? Should I put them somewhere else in my setup? I can always rinse and put into my fresh water setup. can you send me a pic of what you light setup down there is please. Want something that looks very clean. I'll add a little pump to get the tumble. What about the fact there is no algae down there yet is that ok?

Sorry here

Those little balls become nitrate factories unless you rinse them. They are probably pretty good at breeding pods. Consider putting them into separate containers so you can remove them and rinse them periodically. Or just put them in your FW setup.

Not sure on lighting but I'd probably get something that was a red grow light to promote the chaeto growth. I'd have to do some searching myself.

No extra pumps needed.

I found a nice cheap led aquarium light on Ebay for less than 20 bucks. It has a clip that goes onto the side of the sump. With a flexible neck that you can move around

As far as a shop light are you talking about this one attached. If I need a red light which one will connect to shop light like this one?

Those marine pure ceramic balls. They are completely different then old school bio-balls. I've been meaning to pick some up to make up for the lack of rock in my display. I've heard nothing but good things about them

Yeah I clean mine and have had no issues with trates or phos. but who knows maybe down the line might ge some build up. Was thinking of putting them in a basket for half of the refugium and then some chateo in the other half. I'm looking for something presentable as far as the light. Not trying to dog on the shop light idea. But to me it doesn't look clean.(If that was what you were referring to daveocean) Can you post a picture of yours?Really was thinking some type of leds. Not feeling the high wattage bulbs. Anyone had any success with the Auqa Gadget MagnaFuge LED Light - Innovative Marine?

I just tossed a basketball size clump, let me know when you are up and running and I will send you a freezer back full.

I've tried getting Chaeto to grow with the Aqua Gadget MagnaFuge LED twice now. Not sure if it's easy to see in the attached pic, but my chaeto is starting to brown out and break apart. I'm starting to get little bits and pieces of chaeto coming up through my return pump into the DT now.

Curious if others have had success with this light or not? It may not be the source of my problem, but it's top on my list of suspicions right now. 6w is a pretty small light from everything I've come across. (I do love the magnet mounting feature though.)
