Refugiums and SPS

Can Refugiums cause more trouble than help? I have a fuge that gets pretty funky and has lots of algae etc. My Display dosen't have any algae at all and i guess this is a good thing I am running Chaeto and caluerpa in my sump. Would I benefit better in an SPS tank to get RID of the Chaeto and Caluerpa put in some Mangroves (less messy) and just fill the fuge section with some live rock?

IMO fuges are not necessary for sps tanks. Sand and live rock trap detritus, and chaeto needs to be tumbling in your fuge so it wont trap detritus and also gets light to all parts so it wont start to die, releasing more nutrients back into your tank. IMO the downsides outweigh the positives. When your sump only contains equipment it allows for very easy manual removal of detritus that accumulates by syphoning it out with a water change.

I have always ran a fuge on my sps tanks. It us easy to get chaeto to tumble, not a fast tumble. I think the more there is to export nutrients the better. It also creates a refuge for pods and shrimp to survive and grow to help populate the tank.

Double yes on the flow.

I have half my drains going to my fuge and the other half to my skimmer. Every few months I have to blow out the rocks in my fuge from detritus build up. I have some good size fish in my display. Sometimes I am ok with filter socks but it hard to get to my fuge. I need to change the plumbing layout.

I am changing it around now so my fuge will only get skimmer water and also add some filter floss except when I travel.

Darn My Fuge Has almost no Flow lol. I turn the macro algae in there every so often lol...

No good all that stagnant water. If you have rock in there it is not able to do its job with no flow. Like the other post the algae tumbling helps getting hit by light. Pulling it out once and a while and shaking it in a pail of s/w to shake of some poop helps too.

I'm gonna throw a Koralia 4 in there tonight and one in the Skimmer Section too to keep more waste suspended. In Time I will think about removing my fuge section. Any tips to keep macro algae from clogging the koralia 4?

I am in no way saying a fuge isn't a productive waste export system. From my limited personal experience it can attribute also be a negative if not setup correctly or maintained properly. I think you really have to look at your system design and filtration system to make that decision. If it is designed right, with proper and easy maintenance in mind the add water volume and additional water polishing can't hurt. That also depends on how much volume you have. That is why I really think a complete overall system design for long term and easy maintenance is a big key. Small patient changes have also worked way better for me. Wanting fast results usually affected other things. One big one for me was Algae out breaks. With a few SPS and my strong fish I have been lucky. I just don’t want to risk my fish that have been with now for years, and I sure as hell don’t want to kill my new corals. New QT in my future..

This year I am making some efforts to hopefully get my tank in the right direction for SPS. I have a 300 display with a 150 fuge and a 150 sump. Down the line if I move or get a bigger display whichever comes first. I am not going to add more volume to my fuge and sump. The extra volume also increases additives, salts and blah blah. I hopefully will have a sump sectioned out a little better. Like I said I only want my skimmed water going to my fuge. I most likely will have some type of mechanical filtration also before the skimmed water enters the fuge. Good flow with my live rock in the fuge and the standard reverse lighting. A few types of macro too. If my macro doesn't grow that well than oh well, at least I know good clean water is getting back to my display.

Before you remove it why don’t you give a run down on your system design first? I am sure there might be a lot of others with more experience that might be able to give you some more positive input. Another thing I remember a few years back a lot of people were big on putting the fuges overhead but that is a whole different topic.

I have a 125 With about 160lbs of Live Rock

Lighting is 14X 39w T-5 HO in a Aquatinics Constellation Fixture
Warner Marine K2 Cone Skimmer
Mag 18 Return Pump Split into 2 Loclines

Currently I have 4 Hydor Koralia Evolution 3 1050gph Pumps on a Red Sea Waver Maker Pro for Water Movement

(I Was told that this is not enough and that I should add back in my Hydor Koralia 4's that I have soaking and were intending on selling)

I am running ozone and a BRS Dual Reactor with GFO and Carbon. I do a 25gallon Water change every 2 Weeks and use RODI.

If you replace a couple 3's in your tank with the 4's than you can drop the old 3's in your sump/fuge. How does the water leave and return? Any pics?
