Refugiums Vs. Chemi-pure/purigen

Is this even a valid argument? Just let me know. Dont' be bashful, yell in caps if you have to.

It would seem that both remove similar items from the aquarium. (nitrates, phosphates etc.). Both stabilize pH?

Also, if one does do a little HOB 'fuge modification, can one use a marineland bio-wheel filter? (how about using one for any nano-filtartion in general while we're at it). I see EVERYBODY and their dog using AquaClears of various sizes but for cheap DIY, nothing beats whats around the house and for me that's definitely marinelands. In the form of an emperor 400, a couple 200's a 350 and maybe even another one somewhere.

Thanks, I just want to make the best little nano I can when I decide to brave it.

I think.. and only think, that many use the AquaClears for their openness on the inside of the filter. Most of the Marineland filters have little room. But the idea is there, there is a separate compartment off of the tank, and room to put something in like LR rubble or chaeto. I have had a Penguin 350 w/out biowheels running on my 55 reef for almost 2 years now. I am sick of replacing their stock cartridges and am changing over to media bags of phosban and carbon.

But to answer your question, I don't see why you can't use one of those other power filters to make your HOB fuge. Any size fuge is better than nothing IMO. And I think those little 9w CF lights will fit over a larger power filter as well. Good Luck

What is the reasoning for this? Do the biowheels harbor nitrates?

Thank you for your ideas!

I imagine it would work on just about any HOB. The aquaclears work so well because they're HUGE. Size matters in this case.

Just found that post from the old AC to refugium thread. In case anybody is reading a long.

If you believe all of the advertising, then Chemi-pure, Purigen, or the new Chemi-Pure Elite would be that easiest way to go, and maybe even cheaper depending on the setup. I am running Chemi-Pure Elite in a BC8 right now and it's given me the clearest water I've ever seen. As for nitrate/phosphate reduction, I haven't tested the water recently, still waiting for the end of the month. Then we shall see

I appreciate that. But I know for a fact that Chemi-Pure had a very nice effect on my nitrites and nitrates. Hopefully it works out for you too. And yes, definitely a water clarifier!

I have read about a couple people using it before their refugium so maybe the best of both worlds?

For my 10 gallon nano I have grape and feather caulerpa growing along with purigen in a small cannister filter. It's so clear I can't tell that there is water even in there.

Do you have a picture of how you have all that crammed in there. Just curious how you make all those things fit! Thanks. Do you have an auto topoff device?

My vote is a fuge, don't like using/buying chemicals if it's not necessary.

I like that outlook. I guess its a matter of trial and error to see which ways work and which don't. But I really do enjoy thinking that I could filter my tank with just live rock and macro-algae. Less technology than most FW tanks!
