Regal and Goldflake Angels

I am probably asking a very hard question to answer with facts. I have seen regal angels and goldflake angels in reefs . I personally love the gold flake and regal angel . Can you keep these in a reef with some LPS and SPS and long as you feed them good ?

I'd really like to know this as well as the goldflakes pop up more and more in everyday trade. Are they reef safe and what is the minimum size tank you would recommend for them?

I would put the Regal ahead of the Goldflake as far as how reef safe they are. SPS should be safe for both. The LPS can be hit or miss, but most of the time they will leave them alone if brought up from juveniles and feed very frequently.

In regards to tank sizes, I just posted in a thread regarding these angels and many others. The thread is "tank sizes for large angels" in this forum. I think that 150 would be a minimum and 180 or more would be better to get that length and depth for them to roam around. With both of these fish high quality water and suitable tankmates will also be important in keeping them successfully.

I am going to generalize what I see on the forum as I don't have these two fish. I would say for tank size a 5' 180 for a single one of the two fish. For both 6-7' 240 would likely work.

As for reef safe; every fish is different. It's best to start with a small one, and get them eating prepared foods exclusively. Most all fleshy lps like acans, and zoas will be a meal some day. Some seem to eat chalice corals, others don't. Also I believe loss in PE in sps due to some picking.

If your capable at growing a large thriving reef system for these fish and are adept at proper care for these medium fish they make stunning additions to reefs.

I have yet to take the angel plunge and put one in my reef, also due to it's smaller size I would likely look at a dwarf species.

Okay . Thanks. So if they are more likely to be reef safe if they are brought up from juveniles , should there be coral in when you add them , or should you feed them for awhile, then introduce the coral?

Are they compatible with tangs ? I was actually gonna put one of them with some of these tangs : blue hippo, sailfin, achilles, blue powder, orange shoulder,etc..

What tank mates aren't they compatible with ? And will they pick on BTA's and Maxima Clams ?

Regals are realy shy so they have to be with less agresive tank mates or maybe one could be added first so it can be with agressive fish but not sure.

added a juvi Regal to my 450g DT (containing about 60 other fish), at beginning of this year... was in QT for 6 weeks, shy at first...gets along with all tankmates,(including 6 other angels and 10 tangs) eats everything...no problems with RBTA or clams....thinking to add larger Red Sea Regal, soon!

I also find that regals and goldflakes are fine with BTA's and clams. There is also a reason I don't have LPS, as LPS can be like crack to angels. They might be ok fro a while, but one day they try it and LPS is gone.

lol Good analogy. So does anyone know if they like certain lps better than other ? like ricordea, frogspan, brains, torches ...or would they like something a little harder, like scans, chalices, etc...

And do they usually bother, Stylophora, Prisylopora ( Wrong spelling ). Or do they like monticaps ?

I would never trust any angel with acans or any other fleshy brain-type LPS. As LargeAngles says, they are very nearly irresistible to angels. People have reported having better success with more noxious LPS like frogspawn, hammers, and galaxy corals.

Other angels like soft corals such as zoanthids, mushrooms, ricordeas, xenia, anthelia, etc., but will leave sinularia and other softies alone.

As to SPS, it's also something of a crapshoot. A multibar angel that never picked at sps in the tank of the guy I got him from chomped a pocilipora frag I had within two minutes of putting it in my tank. He's largely left my montis alone.

In other words, it depends on the fish and it's hard to predict.

I keep a Goldflake, a Regal and other angels in a reef with no problems. I just make sure my reef is angel compatiable. I keep mushrooms, ricordea, sinularis and other leathers.

I have had both in a mixed reef in the past and they didn't touch my LPS, although I did keep mostly frogspawn, Torches, etc. They will nip at SPS, however if the coral is healthy it can survive a few nips. I would chance either in your reef as their beauty makes up for the possibility of coral damage. Both needs a lengthy QT and must be treated for fluke and internal parasites. Getting both as juvi makes it a bit easier to get them to adapt to captive life and feeding. Try to avoid the larger 4"+ Goldflakes. There are a few of us on the board that have had the larger GFs mysteriously die after doing well for months. Good luck with whatever you choose. BTW, I am a big proponent of getting the GF direct from a wholesaler in HI, as to avoid the normal wholesale chain. You avoid exposing the fish to more parasites and disease.

I had a Goldflake that come from a softie tank. He didnt bother the softies at all so I figured that I would be safe... He beat the hell out of my sps. Didn't bother lps. It was the only Angel that I ever had to remove from my tank. Only Goldflake that I've ever had too.

I had a Regal once that ate every Acan polyp in my tank. I didn't much care at the time, I was just glad that he was eating something. I've had several Regals that didn't eat a single coral, but then again, they wouldnt eat anything. Including food!

Search. Read. It is a risk. Some of us are willing to take it, You decide for you.

I would warn, Regals should only be attempted after a lot of research and some good hobby experience. They can be very difficult to keep alive. Even the ones from DD.
