How did you get it to eat? I know it's hard and usually the live cockle is the way to go at the start. That is what I did last time I attempted it and got the fish to eat that but wouldn't eat anything else.

Buy the smallest live clams at the supermarket and I feed one every 2-3 days and also feed frozen and pellets everyday. Once he started nipping the live clam then drop back on the live clam say every 3-4 days, 4-5 days...

By the time I move new additions to the DT they usually prefer pellets more than frozen.

man...4 inchers...thats a bit big. but i had success with them.

clam on the half shell is how i got them to eat. But as you said, it wouldn't eat anything else. The Indian Ocean one started to nibble on flakes though.

one way i found was a good way to help fussy angels and butterflys to eat was to get nice tasty/smelly food, take a small bit of live rock out and smear the food over it, pushing it into crevices and holes in the rocks. this would often work well. one food ive found works well is squid.. the fish seem to enjoy the smell of it. but try everything you can with fish like these. a lot of things can put a new specimen off eating, including being in with intimidating fish, having no-where secure to hide, parasites and other diseases.

used to work in marines in a store, when got regal in, would always set up tank with a nice big cave for it, and have some peacfull shoaling (dither) fish to encourage it to settle. then would literally just try everything until found some things it really likes. sometimes enhancing food can entice it.

I intend on doing a cycle with just the two fish - no others so I can really pay attention to them. Plenty of 2-3 inch Maldive Regals about. Just they all cost $200-$250.

I can get $50 4" Regal Angels collected from Manilla. But Manilla Regals are 95% destined for the great aquarium in the sky. They have the worst rep in the industry. I can get $100 Maldive Regals but they are the 4" ones. I see 2" and 3" Maldive Regals at 2 respected vendors here in Japan for the 20,000 to 25,000 yen mark (roughly $200 to $250).

Bottom left at 5cm (2")says モルジブ (Maldives) at $200 and the one next to it is a 7-8cm (3") Regal from バリ産 (Bali). The Bali Angel is up for just $5,800 yen (about $60). The big difference is the 2" Maldive specimen is marked

meaning it is eating. The other one doesn't have that mark. However, Indonesian Regal Angels such as Bali Regals don't have that good a reputation either but this is more varied than the Philipine caught ones. Phillipine Regals are generally grey-bellied whereas both variants appear around Indonesia (as reefs around there are enormous and vast). But the region has a reputation for bad practices in fish collection. So that $200 2" Regal is a winner. Good region, right variant, it's small and it's eating.

The top 3. Price is 24,800 yen or about $250. But they are all sold by the looks of it. Notice the $60 Manilla Regals on the 3rd row.

Generally, in Japan, cheap Regals are dead Regals.

i see what you mean. i guess you get what you pay for, and if cheap regals have a particularly bad survival rate i guess would be much better digging deeper in your pocket and get a better individual.

I would go with one of the juvi's on the second link that are from Manilla, 6 to 7 cm, & pair it with the misbar yellow belly. They look just like mine did when I first purchased it. That's about the same price I paid around $60.00. Mine ate immediatly & loves small pellets.
