Regal Angel Primer

I don't think the quarantine period will prevent the fish getting a parasitic infection, as it probably had it when it arrived, but it will make it a lot easier to isolate the fish so that you can treat it.

A weakened fish (from transport stress etc) will have a heightened tendency to being overcome by such an infection, so is most likely to need treatment for it in the first few weeks of captivity. I would imagine that on the reef, such an infection might be kept under control, or even removed, by various cleaners.

Boyed by my curent success, albeit only one months worth so far, I have been considering that also. There seems to be a bit of advice about that warns against trying to put two in the same tank however. Your experiences will be interesting to follow.

Good Luck

When you say "pair up" are you talking about a male with a female. It was my understanding that sexing these fish was very difficult if not impossible.

Steve

Can you tell me some of this advise youve read ? Is it specific to regals or angels in general ? My plan is keeping the two in a separate tank for next few months and then combining them in a larger tank at the same time to reduce the aggression/ territorial behavior.

Thanks

Curt

Im no fish expert by any stretch of the imagination but according to some folks, if you look carefully at the gill cover in all angels there is a spine.

The longer one is supposed male shorter is female. Take a close look at some of the pictures of various regals and there is a difference.

There is a gentleman in FL that has a spawning pair of regal that I contacted that pointed this out to me. He is a member of RC named "fragguy" I think. He has an incredible tank that has spawnig pair of purple tangs even!!

BTW I have been checking out your tank in progress. I have to say that your equipment room with its deltec goodies is just amazing...Best Ive seen

Best of luck in completing your tank

Thank you for the kind words. Please keep us informed of your progress. I was hoping to add a pair of regals to my tank but when I tried to order a pair I was told by the MarineCenter that they could not sex these fish. You have at least given me some hope now. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences so I might copy.

Hmmm....I hadn't heard this before so decided to complete some research on this subject for my own knowledge.

It appears Dvmsn is correct.

Most angelfish start out as females and then revert to males. In the Centropyge family, it has been noted that some males can even revert back to a female.

These two are the most recent. It was specific to Regals in these cases, but probably applies to most big angels.

But, from this very thread, we can see that they have been combined successfully. I guess you just have to try, and be prepared to find a new home for one (if you can catch it) if you fail.

Steve,

Thanks for the articles.

I am considering getting a RA and Emperor angel in the same tank? Has anyone successfully accomplished this? If so, what size is your tank.?

After reading this article, I am now not sure this is a good idea.

Thanks,
Kirk

Thanks guys for the articles. Very informative.

I have been having some probs with the Marinecenter. They will not answer or return my phone calls or return my emails....

As an aside, I got a Potters a couple days ago and he has been a model citizen. I know thats not a regal, but if your like me you like anything to do with angels.

Henry,

This is not the first time I have heard of this problem from them, so unfortunately you are not alone in this department. :(

To win my business, I look for quick follow up and good customer service.

Food preparation

Food preparation

In the interests of providing a good quality long term diet for the Regal, and due to the scarcity of specialised angel formulas down here, I have embarked on an exercise to produce my own frozen food mix. I am slowly collecting various ingredients, including; octopus, squid, mussel, scallop, shrimp, plus 2 types of nori and have been experimenting with other items to see how they are received.

I have tried a small piece of local cold-water sponge to see that it was acceptable and not toxic (figured they would either stay away from it or spit it out, if it was). The Regal and a few others took an occasional nibble at this but were not that enthusiastic. This lack of enthusiasm was not a great surprise as it has totally ignored, as far as I can tell, a couple of tropical sponges I got from another tank. I guess not all Regals are that interested in sponge. Perhaps they mainly eat sponge when there is nothing better on offer. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll include some anyway, now I have it.

On the other hand, a piece of frozen cabbage leaf was consumed with great gusto by the angel, all the tangs, the clown (which also tried to feed a piece to his anemone) and most of the larger damsels. I am going to try some lightly cooked peas next as these have proved popular in the past.

I was not planning on trying to source some local tunicate, but a small one came with the fresh live mussels, so I cut it in half and put it in the tank. It was pounced on with such enthusiasm that I might see about getting some now, although Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m not sure if the angel actually got any.

The Blue Tang now only chases the Regal in a perfunctory sort of way and they have even been observed eating together off the same bit of freshly opened mussel.

New regal

New regal

Hello folks

Here's a pic of the new regal. He is quite big(At least 5.5 inches) He is still jet-lagged, shy and not eating yet. He is alert and active though

He got here on Tuesday morning. He picks at the LR and samples various food and spits it out. I am going to try live brine tomorrow.

Henry,

Looks really nice!!

My fish are still shy, but are active and pick off of the LR. I am soaking mysis shrimp with garlic, but no one is accepting the food except the orange diamond goby. He is having a feast !

The more I see this beautiful fish AND the more I see reefers able to successfully keep this fish, it is giving me a positive feeling about make a purchase on one. :)

Clearly wanting to eat, so you have got over the first hurdle. Mine only pecked at the rock and ate stuff it was already familiar with, from its 3 weeks stay at the quarantine station, for the first few days. Only when it had overcome its initial shyness and started to observe the other fish eating, did it start to take other food seriously.

Has it met the resident Regal yet?
