Regal Angel Primer

Well the one i have coming i think is a female i need to read up on this, any good reads on sexing a regal angel?

also i guess the live clams or mussels is the way to go.... how long do i leave it in the tank?

thanks!

Nick

With only a few fish, probably an hour or so. In my case (24 fish) I just left it in and took out the cleaned off shells the next morning.

I have been going to a seafood market and buying the smallest live clams they have. They will remain alive several days in your refrigerator if you get them fresh. Crack one open...and a little garlic if necessary....and place in the tank. My two regals absolutely go nuts over these things. I'm not sure if I would get a pair if I had it to do again. The larger regal is very dominant over the smaller one...to the point where I sometimes have to give the smaller regal her own clam..btw...they are almost identical in size with one being slightly larger. The smaller regal has shown signs of stress due to the larger regals harrasment but currently appears healthy. They are still not eating mysids out of the water column although they will sample the food. They are eating a small clam a night though...so they are getting quite plump.

Best of luck with your regal.

I got my female regal from Serdar. I have to say that he is one of the most knowledgable dedicated aquarist I have dealt with. You will get a very healthy specimen.

In terms of sexing fish there has been some discussions few pages back but in summary, males have long gill spine. If you look at pic of Steves regal it is obviously male. Mine is obvious female.

A question for you..Are conspics reef safe?

Curt

I am glad to hear your regals are doing good. Has there been actual pecking or fin damage from the regal to regal violence?

Well as you know any angel is a chance same with the conspic, but i am read that most have been safe so to speak.... i mean its a chance, and i love the conspic.... they weill destroy your zoos though like regals...

good news i just got the package and she looks good, now aclimation will begin!

but anyway conspics are not cheap so you have to be willing to spend the money and take the risk at the same time.... thats why i am considering it at this point....

Nick

I don't see any fin damage to this point. The aggression mostly occurs when food (a clam) is introduced into the tank. The smaller angel had a minor case of lympocystics (sp?) but that has since dissappeared. Is this type of aggression typical for newly introduced regal pairs? Do they normally settle down after a peroid of time and share meals? The larger regal is a very bold fish and doesn't even shy away from the yellow tang at this point.

anyone out there that can suggest a net i should use? shoudl it be very fine or very coarse? or should i use my hands?

thanks!

Nick

Just wanted to post an updated picture of my female Indo-Pacific Regal. Here she is after 8 months in my tank:
Regal800x640.jpg

She's doing great. She is plump and is a voracious Nori eater. I've seen her steal a chunk of Nori straight out of my Yellow Tang's mouth.

so the gill spine you guys are reefering to is right behind the eye correct? going vertical?

and the shorter ones are females and longer ones are males?

thanks!

Nick

Actually it's in front of the pectoral fins below the eye and is horizontal. In my picture you can see the small spine. Look just below the gill opening. It's blue.

I have never used either a net or my hand on my Regal. To introduce it, I let its bag float in the tank for 20 minutes then opened it and started to tip cups of tank water in every few minutes. After about 15-20 minutes of this (bag was full) I just tipped it and the water into the tank.

So how long would it need to be to be considered a male? i mean my little guys is pretty small so i am thinking female? i will try and get a pic up soon so you guys can confirm...

Hi all,

While its been a while since I posted on this thread. So without anymore delay. This is my 4th month with my yellow chested regel (red sea) It has learn the taste for the dieing sps and my scoly (which I protect with eggcrate). I have frogspawn, dendro, 4 different kind of xenia, zoo(yes zoo's are safe), candy cane, and a few other softie. The regel will only nip at the dieing part of or if a sps is dieing in the form of stn or rtn. My other remaining sps is ignored and the ones they are dieing from unknown cause that I know of since my other sps are fine.

nbd13,

Ive notice that the spine is longer and blue. Where as the female are shorter and yellow. This is true from what I see with indo and red sea type. But with the last few picture from the last few pages im not sure about the color. The short and long spine still true?

Aquaduck,

Hmm from what everyone said that long is male. yours look a lot lot longer then my regel. the spine on yours is probably 2 times longer then mine and your spine is also blue vs my yellow spine.

Sounds like you are off to a great start! Glad your regal is eating already. Looks like serdar hooked you up with a great regal. Pics please....

Aquaduck

That is a nice regal picture. I think a healthy indo pac regal like yours, is just as nice as any red sea regal. It looks very exotic with the dark belly.

Can you post some close ups. I havent seen a yellow spine on a regal. BTW do you seriously have all those tangs in a 75 tank? Or are you just setting bait for the tang police???LOL

Henry

Well he ate a couple bites at dinner time also... i feed some mysis and some of my own food again and it looked like he ate some more....

so i am happy about this, i am going to use the turkey baster like copps does also....

so i a, hopefully, i think he found a nice hiding spot to go when he feels threatned also so thats good....

anyway i will try and get some pics up soon....

Nick

At what age/size does the dorsal spine on the regals begin to differ in size. I am now worried as both my regals have similar length spines......they were purchased as a pair....now it appears they may be the same sex.

LOL! I don't know for sure now that you mention it. My Regal is about 4" long. The spine is about 3/16". Maybe "she" is a "he"? What is considered a short spine and what is considered a long spine?

HOZERTHEBONEFISH, thanks for the compliment :D

EDIT: Ok, I just looked back through this thread to Steve Atkins picture. His Regal has a huge spine that almost reaches the dorsal fin. That is truly a male. Therefore based on that I would say mine is a female.
