Regal Angel Primer

Here's my little guy from indonesia...about 1.5 inches long and eats EVERYTHING I put in, flake,pellets,nori,mysis,krill...He doesn't even look at the corals or the two anenomes I have in there.

My regal has been with me 6 months now. Eats NLS pellets as if he thinks he's a FW Oscar:

Definitely one of the more trickier fish to wean onto dry food though.

Hi Everyone,

Well, after my post here on Monday, I'm glad to say my Regal has since fully recovered and was transferred to my display tank yesterday.

He is very active, not hiding at all and constantly picking at the few massive zoa colonies I have left. I don't mind him eating them at all, since my tank is full of SPS and the remaining zoa's I have left are on large rocks that I didn't want to move. My purple tang didn't even bother him, which I was worried about.

My only concern is that my current fish (2 bartlett anthias, purple tang, maroon clown, & mystery wrasse) are all very fast eaters. The regal was picking at clams on the half shell in QT and started showing interest in brine shrimp before I transferred him. How has everyone else dealt with this? They eat so fast that by the time my Regal shows any interest, it's gone. He's only been in the display for 1 day so far, so I'm not overly concerned because he's really fat and eating the zoas, but how long did it take for your Regals to start eating from the water column?

I'll try to post a picture later!

I've a Xhatch that's almost twice the size of the angels and butterflies so I usually feed 2 live clams on half-shell so the smaller fish gets a chance. But still the Xhatch takes two big bites and the meat is pretty much gone. If they want to eat they will eventually learned to jump in for a quick bite and even the small (2.5-3" angels) fish will jump in for a share. Give it time and they will learn.

Thanks for the feedback flameangel88.

Do you think his diet of zoas and picking at the LR will hold him over until he learns to eat from the water column?

He's really fat right now, but at what point (in time) should I start to worry about him not eating from the water column? I've seen a couple posts on here mentioning that one of their regals didn't eat prepared foods for over a month.

If your regal is fat then I wouldn't be overly concerned and just keep a varied diet till you can see what it will eat. I've had angels that's taken 3-7.5 weeks to eat prepared food.

i have an indo-regal angel super shy he is getting better, he has already eaten a TON of my zoas and he has lately been picking on the kenya tree but i really dont care about those, i have had him for about 3 or so weeks and he still hasnt eaten prepared foods, i feed mysis and nori and hasnt eaten i want him to start eating prepared foods and not my corals, what do you all suggest? because the first two weeks he didnt even look at the corals, let alone eat them, then i think he got hungry ; /

I had to start mine off with clam on the half shell. It took her a week to start eating frozen mysis and formula 1. She now devours anything I put in there--flake, pellets, anything. She was also quite shy at first.

try spectrum pellets

Agree!!!

Mine eats the Spectrum pellets. These aren't just any pellets (IMHO). But my fish all eat this from my Regal Angel, bluespot jawfish, even my lawnmower blenny! (of course, it eats algae also) Speaking of mysis shrimp, etc... My Regal won't touch live brine shrimp, even though all of the others in the tank eat like there's no tomorrow.

They also make the pellets called Thera-A which has garlic and *may* stimulate the appetite of your fish.

The one item I like about these slow-sinking pellets is exactly that... they sink slow, so it gives more time to enter the water column and seems to make a difference in feeding the fish.

But, as adtravels mentioned, the brand Spectum. I know, I sound like a shill, but I've never had any trouble feeding any of my fish with these.

Another suggestion is to try Arcti-Pods by Reef Nutrition. Always had success with this also. I don't feed this on a regular basis, but supplement once in a while to supplement. It's also good for zoas, lps, anemones, etc...

Good luck! (and btw... mine nips at zoas every once in awhile even after all of these months)

sad to say but one of my larger regals died last night. i've had my too larger ones for nearly a year. may 29th would've been one year. she was looking kinda skinny that last couple weeks. The others seem to be fine though. pretty sad to see that beautiful fish die.

Wow. Sorry to everyone experiencing a loss here.

This may be bad timing, but I just picked up my first Regal yesterday from Blue Zoo Aquatics. I'm cautiously optimistic at this point. She/he looks very healthy and quite fat at this point. Currently in my soon-to-be prop tank (if I ever put any coral in there), but she's got a bunch of LR to pick at that's full of sponges. Hopefully I'll find an entree that's to her liking. Got Red and Purple seaweed to start, frozen mysis, brine, and will pick up some live clams on the way home. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Just wanted to show you guys a crazy looking Regal Angel. Someone was quick and put this fish on hold right when the store got it. So i decided to go with a scribbled angel. It's currently on hold for me until eating.

That fish is dope! Reminds me of that paracentropyge hybrid.
