Regal Angel Primer

How long did it take for your guys' regals to seem comfortable in your aquarium? Mine eats but it is still very shy and hides a lot. I've only had it for 3 days so I assume this normal?

My Regal took about a month before feeling comfortable swimming and eating in the open. Now he eats frozen in mid water column and pellets off the sand bed with the other angels.

Thanks Flameangel. Mine was swimming around more today grazing on live rock. Mine's only really shy when I get close to the aquarium. Also, I would like mine to eat a little more aggressively but like I said I've only had her a few days. Do Angels really get much from grazing in aquariums? My live rock is very mature and does have ample sponge.

It takes time for them to get used to us being around but once they associate 'us' bringing food to them they will come right up to the top waiting to be fed. :)

I started feeling comfortable with mine right around 6 to 7 months. Now they eat from my hand :) Feeding still revolves around them though. I target the regals and the other fish get the leftovers.

When I approach my tank slowly, all the fish will usually swim around normally.

Quite often, after putting a measuring cup of food soaked in Vitamin C and Selcon with no movement by myself, it appears the fish scare themselves and they will dart to the safety of the live rock for a moment and then return to feeding almost as fast.

This must be some kind of instinct for marine fish from the wild as they will come right up to the surface when I am putting food in the tank? The newest fish are a pair of Six Lined Wrasses which are quite active swimming in and out of the live rock all day long and eating with the community.

02/07/07 Powder Blue Tang - 4 1/2"
10/23/07 Purple tang - 4"

02/07/09 Blue Girdled Angelfish - 3 1/12"
08/24/08 Regal Angelfish - 3 1/12"

12/07/06 Pair Clarkii Clownfish
10/01/06 Pair Cinnamon Clownfish
02/27/08 6 Yellow Tailed Blue Damsels
02/27/08 4 Four Striped Damsels
04/19/09 1 black mouth Damsel

09/17/09 two six lined Wrasses

Note: I now dose the tank with Kent Marine-C for vitamin c every day. Drs. Foster and Smith told me the white is the very beginning of the LLHE diseaes which developes very slowly and goes away just as slowly so I am glad I caught it in time although the fish is one of my most active and good eaters. I cannot think of a food put into the tank is will not eat!

A few of my fish gets HLLE after I treat with copper but most don't. The two that are most susceptible are the Cream angels and Watanabe (more so on the female). The 2 Cream angels I'd since last May still has it and healing extremely slow while the Scribbled angel had it and went just like that.

Grocery Store Clam

Grocery Store Clam

Haha, no clams I got at the grocery store. :)

I think variety is a necessary goal with feeding for nutrition for a healthy long life.

I feed my Regal including other fish small 1/8" sized pieces. It will take a piece and gulp it down as long as it can start to fit it in its mouth. The grocery stores used to carry chopped clam pieces by the pound and then they all said they could not get it anymore. I had to hunt around and only found one store where I can special order one pound packages of Razor Clam which I slice into half inch pieces for feeding my two Red Rose Bubble Tips and what is left over I cut into bite size pieces for the fish which is a big enthusiastic party time for my fish as I think they all like clam. My Regal will come up near the right side where I usually feed and I will toss pieces above it and it dose chow down. I haven't used the clam for feeding on other days as I think once a week is enough in addition to the Instant Ocean Gel food, frozen brine, mysis, plankton, and angel food, freeze dried mysis and brine, Ocean Nutrition One and Two flakes and pellets.

What size Regal do you have?

My 3 1/2 inch would not be able to eat all that many 1/8 inch pieces of razor clam let alone an "entire" clam.

I also forgot to mention Red Seaweed(softer for fish with more sensitive mouths like angels, etc). Mine will chew up pieces of cutup seaweed soaked in Selcon.

Well I finally picked one up yesterday. He was eating in the store and was not hiding. I added him last night with the lights off and he looked around some. Today he was out front and swimming around when the lights came on. So far he has already eaten some seaweed flakes. I am going to try some chopped clam and shrimp later.

Sounds like he is off to a good start:thumbsup:

Well a few more days of treatment and the regal will go to the DT. The chin is almost completely healed, He was treated for flukes as well. He is a nice and fat 5 inch blue belly regal. He has some great color. Nice thick black bands.
I cant believe how healthy and good he is doing. This one has been the easiest angel to get acclimated than the rest i own. The test will come when he gets to the DT and the purple tang gives him the red carpet treatment. ;) I'll release him at lights out so he can acclimate before he is noticed.

Mine is out front and center today and just ate pellets! I will post some pictures of him after I get them uploaded. My purple tang doesn't seem to like him but he is not really chasing him or anything.
