Regal Angel Primer

Thanks for all of your tips - I hadn't heard of the temperature increase idea. But alas she was gone as of yesterday. So two weeks survival. Even tho she had been eating most of that time she had still lost a lot of weight. Pretty humbling. Wonder how a nice damsel fish would look in my tank.

I picked her up today from lfs he warned me of what I read on here but she seams to like my 110 gal. I did make sure she would eat while i was at the store so we will see what happens.

Regals like plenty of live rock to pick at and hide in!

Finsky, when you first bought your regal did she go into QT or the display?

I am in the process of tearing down my 2 tanks and building 1 large 270g tank and am considering trying the regal again. I feel sick about my last regal because she ate everything and I feel if I had acted faster and pulled her to a treatment tank she might have made it.

Every fish I have ever bought has had some type of parasite that needed to be treated and I have bought fish far and wide, so the only way I can see keeping a regal and other more delicate fish would be that they are the only ones in the tank (no stress) or they are able to be treated in QT????

I do plan to read this entire thread before attempting a regal again but would love to hear from those who are successful keeping them and if they went straight to the display or QT.

Also, in my area it seems we cannot get red sea regals and if we do they are large and won't eat, I am considering a long distance trip to pick this fish up next time and would like to know if anyone here has regular access to the red sea version??

I have never used a quarantine tank and all my tank's inhabitants are happy and healthy. My tank is fairly mature approaching four years which allows for alot of growth on the live rock for the fish to pick at and hide in.

Fine outstanding young Regal

Fine outstanding young Regal

no not sure but i will find out, i will get some more pics tonight. I dont think she is going to be real shy, she comes out ocasionally now and Im sure with time she will become alot more shy.

It looks like a twin of my Regal although mine is a gray belly from the Indo Pacific although I do not think it matters. I take each of my fish as the individuals they are!

From the picture it looks like 3 1/2 inches and the color of the belly is not quite discernable.

Overall it looks like a fish with character!

My picture from three months ago with the very beginning stage of LLHE disease, a slow disease to come and a slow disease to cure. This is why I dose my tank every day with Kent Marine-C and my food as well along with Selcon.

After a heavy feeding, he is now hiding or showing his tail end out from one of his many caves and tunnels along with his shipmate, Mr. Majestic angel.

His white around the face is starting to darken up to the color of skin it should be.

Good sign!

Good sign!

mine does like to hide but she does get curious and venture out!

It is a good sign for them to come out and pick around the rocks and go for a swim around the aquarium. Mine does so fairly often and does not hide excessively except when I approach the tank with a camera!:lolspin:

Three months after starting dosing the tank and food with Kent Marine-C in addition to soaking food in Selcon.

I have to say taking pictures of my Regal is like taking pictures in the rare tropical birds in the Amazon. He just does not like to see the camera.

My Regal Angel comes out for food all the time, camera or no camera!

I hope these photos give a better look as I just took them at feeding time.

The first is with a two of his friends, a Majestic Angel and female Cinnamon clown at feeding time.

The skin around his eyes is starting to turn back to the gray of surrounding healthy skin after three months of dosing the tank and food with Kent Marine-C and Selcon.

He and the Majestic both hide in the rocks at night because they are still small enough at 3 1/2" to go in and out of most of the five feet of live rock although the 4 1/2" Powder Blue Tang and 4" Purple Tang also go into the rocks. I got the tangs and angels when they were quite young as I have had both tangs for over two years and the Majestic Angel over a year and the Regal Angel for over a year and a half.

sexing regals

sexing regals

did they give you any idea of how to sex a regal.....was wondering what mine is.......:fish1:

I have not gotten a sex back, but I am told it is determined by gill spine length.

Regal #2, Day #2
Put small amounts of red, green and brown nori, rods food, a mix of ocean nutrition flake and some mysis in. He definitely reacted to the flake and the frozen. In fact he took several bites, I seen him spit most of it out, but this is still a super positive sign on day two. He also started pecking at the glass as soon as the food was in the water. Here is a video of him pecking at the food.
