Regal Angel Primer

I have not gotten a sex back, but I am told it is determined by gill spine length.

Regal #2, Day #2
Put small amounts of red, green and brown nori, rods food, a mix of ocean nutrition flake and some mysis in. He definitely reacted to the flake and the frozen. In fact he took several bites, I seen him spit most of it out, but this is still a super positive sign on day two. He also started pecking at the glass as soon as the food was in the water. Here is a video of him pecking at the food.

It looks great for only 2 days! A pair of Regal's is going to be sweet.

New pictures of my Regal Angel

I just took some new pictures of my 3 1/2" Regal put in the tank August of 2008 using my 100 to 300 mm camera lens which allowed me to get better close up pictures without scaring my Regal. If I used the 55 mm lens I would have to get right next to the glass and the Regal does not like the flash and swims around in and out of the rock not allowing a good clear picture. Here is five of the best. The LLHE is clearing after starting my Kent Marine-C tank dosing three months ago. I also dose my food with Selcon and Kent Marine-C.

I'm curious I have always wanted Angelfish but I have always thought that they eat hard and soft corals and clams, I also thought that there was a 1 angel per tank rule... Yet it looks like all of these are misconceptions on my part?

Any angel MAY eat any coral. They all have differents tastes, just like humans. For instance, not everyone may like onions. Some angels prefer certain corals, other may not.

As far as one angel per tank, it is only advised to mix angels in large established systems if you are a well experienced aquarists. It is not recommended for beginners.

So to answer your question, no, these are not misconseptions.

I've always wanted a Regal Angel, but I'm in fear of Clam nipping. I've got 3 Clams in my display, 2 Derasa's and a Crocea, all of which are 5" or larger.

Any Regal Angel owners out therre with clams in there display? For the most part, do they typically leave clams alone?

Some do, some dont. Ask yourself this..... Do I love clams or regals more? If you answer clams, then I would pass on the regal.

I have always loved angels and corals. But I have always loved angels more. This has definately limited what I keep in my reef, but it is worthwhile to have beautiful fish swimming around. For a person who wants to keep corals and clams with very few issues, angel are not the best choice. However, I have seen several angels in SPS reefs without incident. Clams, meatly LPS, and zoanthids are likely targets for all large angels.

got another pic today was cleaning the tank tonight and she was swimming around with my arm in the tank. Dont have to worry about her not getting food my fear is she is taking all the other fishes food!

I had to do the same with my zoanthids and some LPS. The first egal didn't care to much about them the second loved them and then the 1st followed suit. Needless to say my 2 regals are happy and took care of my zoas in a matter of days. I haven't been brave enough to add a clam to the tank since dead ones seem to be their favorite food :D

Just as with any fish you need to be prepared to deal with issues. Most have general tendancies but as mentioned each fish is different.

You'll find there are exceptions to just about every general statement in this hobby. Heck used to be 2 fish of the same species were big no-no's and now were breeding them.

Just need to plan things out and be prepared to handle the worst.

I have had a Powder Blue Tang and Purple Tang for over two years.

I decided I wanted beautiful fish along with corals and anemones although after I got my Regal angel in August 2008 it ate my four inch Toadstool Mushroom soft coral like a big piece of cake drill down from the top center until there was nothing left. I put a colorful zoo rock for $35 and it ate them like candy at Easter with one day. About a year ago I got a similar sized 3 1/2" Blue Girdled angel which ate all my four different colored mushroom rocks.

I have a breeding pair of Cinnamon clowns and a pair of Clarkii clowns each pair has there own side of the tank. The Cinnamons live mostly in the right side and the Clarkiis live mostly in the right side. I have two red rose bubble tip anemones, one in each end of my five foot tank and three green bubble tip anemones, one in the right side and two in the left side. I am also able to keep four red/pink gonioporas and a purple goniopora along with a red table coral, a couple lobed brain corals, and a lavender encrusting SPS Montiopora.

I have thoughts the angels are picking at the lobed brains when I am not watching although I am able to keep all the other corals and anemones so far.

I really like Bubble Tip Anemones and have room for possibly two to three more. I really enjoy feeding them weekly with 1/2" pieces of razor clam from the grocery store once a week along with Kent Marine Microvert two to three times a week and Zooplanktos with the Microvert.

Tonight I feed all the corals and the three new greens finally closed around the razor clam with their tentacles and ate the clam. I then really enjoy tearing small pieces of left over clam and tossing them into the tank and watch the tangs and angels, especially the Regal, go to town on this weekly treat.

I have read in one of the three volumes of Julian Sprung that a Reef Tank is a tank with corals and fish or just corals. A mixed tank is a misnomer as a tropical reef will have both fish and corals!

I have made my decision to have beautiful fish along with corals and anemones in my tank and it was a choice I happily made. I did not want a corals only tank. I just have to pick my corals with care with two angels.

Didn't mean to imply I'm trying to breed Regals. Mine pretty much ignore one another the larger of the 2 (added second) is a yellow belly the other is gray. When I feed the yellow belly expresses dominance but for the most part they get along.

I do have a pair of pseudochromis fridmanis that spawn and have eggs on a regular basis.
Pair of naked clowns (no eggs yet) They are about 2 yeard old.

2 indigo dotties but no signs of them being a pair.

Gotcha :)

Yep, so far mine have been ok. One is definately dominant but not to the point of affecting the health of the other. Without chcking the dates they've been together longer than a year.
