Regal Angel Primer

He needs to be in QT alone. He needs time to think about the food without other fish rushing in to eat. It is often a time/crowding/conditioning issue. Once it is eating, while alone and knows you are a signal it is getting fed, it can go into general population. The conditioning is kind of like Pavlov's dogs and you will be the signal its time to eat. That signal will override is shyness widen among the other fish.

If he swims out in the open often he is not shy. Dump in mysis formula two small pellet all at once . He looks healthy and alert so he has a chance . Have you seen him pick at your rock ?

thanks all!
I have a few tangs a few dwarf angels and clown in with the Regal. All other fish is only half of her size.

she swim out all day even when I stand close to the tank, she pick at the rock all the time.

I will try PHK36 suggestion.

more suggestions are welcome.

Why don't you give NLS finicky pellet a try as well. I got my moorish idol started on that food.

Agree. This, IMO, is the best way to handle difficult to keep fish, especially finicky eaters.

I agree with the others on QT the next time, but since it has been over a week I feel its too late to move the Regal. I had a female that took three weeks to eat, my male took 2 weeks, my juvenile one day. Like all other fish sub adults are best, large and very small should be left in the ocean. Mine eats PE Mysis, Spiralina Brine, and Larry's Reef Frenzy. You have a clam in your tank so unless you want to take it out I would not entice it with more. If it is picking on the rocks that is a good sign.

I'm in the same boat with a 4 tom5 inch red sea regal. I've had it in my qt for a little over a week and it hasn't eaten yet. I've tried fresh oysters and clams on the half shell, live blackworms, frozen PE mysis, ĺrs frozen, nori, frozen angel mix, and spectrum pellets. It's eye balled the food a few times and has nipped at algae in the tank. It had a fairly good case of flukes so I had to treat with prazi. There were a few sores so I also treated with metro. I'm wrapping up the second round of prazi some hopefully after that I can do a large water change and work on its appetite. It's pretty fat at the moment and doesn't appear to by shy so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will eventually decide to eat.

One thing to add and if I missed it I am sorry but keep an algae clip in the tank.

Finally......................... Day 8, my Regal started to eat Nori.

I kept a large pieces on a clip 24/7 and I will change it everyday for whatever is left over from the previous day and usually just a small piece inside the clip because of all my other fish.

when I try to remove the old nori and it started to break into million of small pieces.......... :lol2: she started to get excited and started to eat them until they are all gone.....

I hope she will continue to eat.

You're lucky that you didn't kill it with a 4 hr acclimation... Should have matched salinity and temp, and been in QT in less than 15 minutes!

Here is my Regal angel tonight. I think I have had him for 6 months. He is still shy. He is out and about but if I approach the tank with my camera, into the rock he goes.

I agree. After long (overnight) shipment there will be ammonia and CO2 in the bag. ammonia is much more toxic with high pH. In the bag unopened the CO2 will keep the pH down and keep ammonia from been too toxic. When you open the bag, CO2 escape result in increase pH of the water and increase ammonia toxicity.

After long shipment, If the fish seem OK in the bag I put the unopened bag in the QT for temperature equilibration. After about 10 mins or so the temp should be the same, I dumped the fish out and change 50% of the water. Then I check salinity. If the salinity is the same, I just dump him into the QT. If Salinity is significantly different, then I do a fast drip. 15 mins at the most and into the DT.
If the fish look bad in the bag, then I just dump him directly into the QT. The fish look bad because Ammonia, CO2 or O2 depletion. These problem need to be correct right away, to hell with salinity and temp.

New Regal

New Regal

Just took possession of a Regal that had been in captivity for 8 years.I believe Rook had it back in 2005 in this thread. He is getting out of the hobby and i bought the Regal from him.So far so good he is out swimming about and already eating.

What is the average captive age lifespan of Regal Angels?I just got one that is around 8 years old.what are some ages of other Regals that you have now?

So how big is this guy? Mine does not seem to grow much, not like my tangs and some other fish.

Learned something new. Thanks. I didn't know anything about Ammonia or CO2 or PH stuffs when shipping fishes over long distant.

I have both of mine for over 2 years. the smaller one of the two (lower left) came in with the juvenile spot. In that time I would say they doubled in weight?
