Regal Angel Primer

I know you do not want to put fresh clams in there, but if you don't i am not sure a tiny bit of nori every day will do.

The most important thing is to get something in their stomach.

In this case with a bone visible, like said above it's probably malnutrition, I would highly suggest putting a clam or 2 in there.

I knwo you are worried about clams in your reef, BUT....

I have 5 angels and put 3 fresh clams in my tank everyday for my regal AND none of the fish even look twice at my 3 clams I have in my tank (all maximas)...

JMO, but you need to get something else in the regals stomach.

To add to the above, most regals are not used to eating from the water column, ie. no mysis, pellets, and so on.

That's why it is eating nori, they eat sponges in the wild, so they do not see something floating past them food.

That's were the clams come in to make the change over to frozen foods...

I have a number of leather corals in my tank and I have never "seen" my Regal take an interest in any of them. HOWEVER, a few weeks ago I was given some Xenia pieces to try with the Regal. The one I put in the tank was on a rock with a small piece of soft coral (I was told it was a Kenyan Tree Coral) and within a day both Xenia and soft coral were gone ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ their demise not observed by me. I strongly suspect the Regal as I have seen him polish off Anthelia but I also suspect the soft coral may have just been eaten due to its close proximity to the Xenia as I have a much larger specimen of the same soft coral and it is growing, albeit slowly, without any obvious damage.

This fish is anything but thin, however you will notice the ridge running along just above the lateral line. He was well fed when he arrrived, has always had a good appetite, has grown nearly 2cm since I git him and has always had that ridge.

Yah, exactly like that. As you said, doesn't look thin and neither does mine but I thought it might be a sign of malnourishment. Mine doesn't have the typically pinched in stomach though....
 
Nick, think I'll try the mussels or other shellfish too as I really don't want to lose this fish. Can't take any chances!!
 
NexDog - As I said mine was forced to go into my main tank (too big for the QT). Reading through this thread I learned about the clams. I feed mine clams with a couple of drops of garlic two days a week. I also have two small clams (maxima's) in my tank and so far it has not touched them. Try that. Mine also seems to have stopped picking at my leather coral and lately it is eating like a CHAMP! It eats anything I put in my tank (cubed formula 1 & 2, angel formula, VHP formula, brine reef, mysis, chopped scallops - all with a couple of drops of garlic). It did take mine 3 weeks to eat though. Hope it continues to do as well as it has been doing.

Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s very exciting to finally watch it eat!! Just takes time and patience. Hang in there.
 
I started reading this thread several months ago, because I was interested in a Regal Angel at the time it was started. What I'm wondering (w/o going back through the whole thread) is where is the best place to buy a small regal? I want a Red Sea, but small. Also when is the best time to add them to a tank. My tank has no fish right now and I'm wondeirng when would be a good time to add one. Thanks!
 
Beckmola - What do you mean by best time to add them to a tank? How long have you had your tank and what do you have in it right now? Mine is in my reef tank behaving very well.

You can try liveaquaria.com and place yourself on the waiting list for a small regal from the red sea. Their prices are very competive and they do have good quality of fish. Once you become aware of that it is available you may even want to take an extra step by calling them and request the fish size you are looking for. I believe their manager is Stacy and she is very nice.
 
Phisybusiness has been able to find juvenile regals when requested. He got mine ~ 2"- 2.5", QT'ed it for me, got it eating and shipped in great shape. Eating the first night and doing fine. IMO, absolutely worth the extra $$$ to get a fish in great shape and exactly the size you're looking for. HTH
 
I don't have anything in my tank right now. Nada. It's a new(er) tank. It's been running now for 2 months and is stable. I was wondeing when would be a good time to add the Regal. I'm thinking after a year or so, but that's just me being on the cautious side of things. I was just thinking that if the Regal doesn't have many fish to stress it out, that might be better. Just thoughts.
 
I put the mussel-type shell fish in last night.l I pryed it open, wrapped an elastic band over it and then wrapped it around a piece of 2" pipe - perfect fit. Haven't seen the Regal eat from it yet but looks like something has been nibbling on it...

I assumed he was actually talking about that ridge between the lateral line and the dorsal fin.

Probably then comes down to how long you have been keeping reef fishes. If you are just starting out (i.e. less than 2 years) then you probably should leave it alone.

Not just starting out :) This is just a new large tank for me. I keep dwarf seahorses and Erectus seahorses along with a reef in my 37g. So I'm not new to this stuff ;)

So are you saying that I could put a Regal in there w/in the next few months?? Would you all think it would be better to add a Regal as one of the 2nd or 3rd fish in there? IMO it would have more of a chance to acclimate w/o being bullied or crowded by other fish.
 
If you have a tank suitable for a Regal and biologically ready, then putting it in first would seem a reasonable idea. If you are not sure if it is ready then add some small non aggressive fish first. You must also remember that a newish tank will have nothing in there already for the Regal to eat so it will need to eat the food you add from the outset.

Some Regals seem not to be particularly bothered about other fish, even ones that bully them a bit when first added, but the normal expectation is that they do not cope well with aggression from larger/more dominant fish.
