Regal Angel Primer

JJmatti -

Mine swims upside down too - but not in the open water...It does like to stay at the front of the glass with its snout sometimes, and that is what I call irradical swimming...perhaps it's just normal for them. Hopefully mine is OK. I do have to trust that after 3 days of medicine, maybe mine will pull right through...just hope and pray I guess.

With regards to food - I soaked mine in Garlic and that worked, howerver, it took about 3 weeks for it to eat. The clams will only do so much, but I cube-up the Ocean Nutrition Formula 1, 2, VHP, and Angel Formula and then put some garlic. Also add some mysis and brine reef or marine cuisine with garlic to give it a variety. Mine right now usually eats the formula 1, 2, VHP and angel formual & some mysis & Brine Reef by Ocean Nutrition. It picks on the clams but doesn't go nuts on them.

NexDog - Sorry to hear. It is really heart breaking to take care of them and then just watch them fade. If this one doesn't make it I may try a Goldflake Angel...hopefully though mine will pull through.

Yea, I'm totally gutted. Plus it's the time invested and it only had a few days to go! Once it had gotten into the main tank it would have thrived like all the others but alas....And finding another young Red Sea Regal is the proverbial needle in the haystack here in Japan...

I put nori on a clip every day for the tang and other fish. He doesnt seem t pay attention to it. I will try putting 2 or 3 nori clips in to see maybe it is just a dominance thing and the tang will not let him eat.

The funny thing is my Regal learned how to eat Nori by watching the yellow tang. They are best buddies and always swim/eat together. How long have you had him in the tank?

the Regal has been in the tank for just under a month now. I had to leave last week for a week long trip and had to have someone else watch him and feed him the clams so I feel like I may have lost time in getting him feeling comfortable in the tank.
The tank has plenty of rock and places to hide and he doesnt look stressed. The Powder Brown and Yellow Tang showed him who was boss the first 2-3 days but since then have adjusted very nicely.

It's still alive - eats a bit and does not look stressed. Its fins look crappy though...I hope it was just the purple tang that beat-up on it and stressed it too much and now it's just recovering.

Regals are indeed beautiful and I had one but died a few days later because of a pump failure leading to an ick outbreak. Keeping one alive longterm is mysterious still. I know two people who had success in keeping Regal longer than a year and when they got another one that Regal didnt live more than a month.

Im not giving up still and will be looking to get another Regal in the future.

I have mine since April 19...unfortunately it was shipped sick. I got it with a cloudy eye, and it cleared. Then it got from what I can see Marine Velvet - hopefully it will clear that up as well. Although like I said, I hope it wasn't stress driven by the nasty purple tang I had...we'll see.

Since you had your Regal for 2 months then considered yourself having a good healthy Regal. Once you get over the marine velvet you should be home free. My other tangs had crappy fins when they were sick but healed a few weeks later. If you dont see your Purple Tang chase the Regal then its likely the ragged fins is from the marine velvet.

You might have to get used to fin damage. Mine seems to just manage to get its fins looking perfect and then within a day or so gets into another fight and ends up with more rips and bite marks. I guess if he ever manages to succeed at becoming boss of the tank the damage might stop.

Well, had to put my Reggie to sleep...it was slowly deteriorating. Some of its snout was worn off from the scratching on the rocks and looked very weak yesterday when I net him and put him down. Very sad experience. Don't think I will be getting another regal...I got too attached and the stress of watching him waste away... I may try a goldflake angel in a month maybe since I have read they are hardier. Anyone has any experience with the goldflake angel or know of a goldflake angel tread I can be directed to? That would be great! Thanks!

goldflakes are generally very hardy. Get one about 3" in length. be a bit picky. some of 'em have much more "gold" in the background than others.

One Year On

One Year On

Well, fortune has smiled and the lad has made it through his first year in my tank. He has grown a bit and seems to get on pretty well with most of his tankmates, although he did start a fight with the Clarks clown while I was taking these pictures.

The yellow tang arrived at the same time and they had already spent 3 weeks together in the same quarantine tank. They don’t hang out together like they used to but still get on very well.

I love to hear success stories when it comes to Regals (and it looks like a year with this species should qualify as an official success). Congratulations!!!

My Regal has made it to just about the 5 month mark though we're keeping it quiet as to not violate one of the main tenents with regard to Moye's Law: "One Of The Most Common Causes Of Disease and/or Accidents Is Bragging." :D

heres a clip of my goldflake with my regal in back feeding off brines. as u can see, goldflake was quite malnourish when i got em. during past 2 months, i have fatten him up quite a bit with my homemade formula.clip

thanks. I make sure the angels have enough cave spaces to hide. it 3 feet front to back, 4 feet left to right, 2 feet height.

I picked up a 1" baby Red Sea Regal on Sunday. As the last one died right at the end of the QT period I really want to try again. This fish was expensive but looks like it's eating flake so I have some hope. :)
