Regal Angel Primer

I forgot, I was told my Regal came from Sulawesi.
Is that Indian Ocean?

It's in Indonesia.

Both Sulawesi and Sumatra are in Indonesia... Keep in mind guys that these exporters in different parts of Indonesia bring fish in from a large area, and just because yours was exported from that location does not mean it's from there.

It's very typical for exporters there to offer both yellow belly and blue belly regals. They always distinguish yellow bellies and will either list them as Indian Ocean regals or yellow belly regals... blue bellies are much cheaper. The Indian Ocean regals will typically cost 2-3 times more from the same supplier. Those regals native to Sulawesi are blue chested, but I believe the ones they're getting in Sumatra are Indian Ocean ones. Sumatra is in the far west of Indo and borders the Indian Ocean. Sulawesi is within the Pacific. I believe the exporters in other parts of Indo that offer both are getting the yellow chested ones from Western parts of Indo like Sumatra and exporting them... I cannot imagine them bringing regals in from further out in the Indian Ocean and still selling them at the low prices they do.

On a side note, my trio of regals is now together as a trio for over two years! (At least they were when I left for work :))

I'm almost positive this is what's going on... Other species brought in from Sumatra are offered by these exporters from central parts of Indo, but the regals are marked as "Indian Ocean" rather than Sumatra because they'd probably rather them be associated with the Indian Ocean than Indonesia...

If wherever you get your fish from tranships these in direct they'll be able to tell you... but might not want to :D

Mine does have the yellow chest. Indo's don't ship as well?

Also I checked the gill spines last night and they are long and purple. A seperate purple stripe comes off the face and continues into the gill spine. It looks like a streak of paint.

I consider myself lucky that I have had my regal for the past year and still doing well. It loves its pellets. So far it hasn't touched any of the corals nor clams in the tank...my goldflake on the other hand...it devoured my zoas :-( Oh well, I love them both either way.

Big boy - sounds like yours is a "big boy".

What kind of pellets do you use and what size?
I just bought some of the New Life Spectrum Marine pellets in 2 sizes, small and big that they make. I would consider the big, a medium size. I can't tell if he's eating them or not. When I put the food in the fishes start going nuts and he goes behind the rocks. I can see in from the side and it looks like he's taking stuff that comes through the rock and settles on the sand but can't tell for sure because there is a piece of tonga branch in the way and blocks the front half of his body. But it looks to me as though he's picking stuff off the sand.

I think I've been confused about the difference between the yellow and blue chested Regals. I thought Red Sea were yellow, Indian Ocean were blue, but from what I'm reading here, both Red Sea and Indian Ocean are yellow, and Pacific is blue (that matches something I saw online at a store recently too). So I guess I should be saying that mine is a Pacific Regal, which is supposed to be less hardy but which so far at least is not.

Is there any known difference between the Indian Ocean and Red Sea regals, even though they both have the yellow chest? Do collection practices between the two areas differ appreciably?

I feed mine the spectrum pellets - they the bigger ones, not the small one, but then again I also feed the formula 1 & 2 small size pellets and it goes after those as well. I also feed frozen Ocean Nutrition Formula 1, 2, Angel formula, and Spirulina. I cube up the cubes to make them look like pellets and it goes after those as well. It's tedious work, but I have gotten used to this every morning, so now it's no big deal...

I still cannot say that I offically seen my Regal eat yet. It looks like she's eating stuff off the sand behind the rock, but I can't confirm. I may have to rip one side of the tank apart and move two pieces of rock that are on the sand to see for sure.
I have seen her pecking at the rocks in certain areas, but can't see if there is a sponge in that area.
I've tried diced phrawd, scallops, life spectrum pellets, emerald cuisine, brine, cyclops, cyclopeeze, nori, reef planktyon, blood worms, broccli and fresh clams split open.
I don't know what else to try. He still looks good, not loosing any color or looking thin.
I just cannot offically say that I seen food go in his mouth.
He also is still a lil' freaked out when I feed. He goes behind the rocks. I think he's eating back there, but I haven't seen food go in his mouth.

Big Boy69 - I would just let it acclimate to the tank. I wouldn't move things around...it may get freaked out and harder for it acclimate to your tank. Give it some time, be patient.

try some live brine if you can....not the best food but i think you just need to get the regal to start eating. I've rarely had anything pass on live brine...if they did, then it's a realllly bad sign.

He ate some live brine last night.
I was goingn to try live ghost shrimp tonight, but will probably get eaten by the other fish before he has a chance.

Great to hear that live brine is working.
Feed him a few times a day he'll probably eat more aggressively...that's when i start mixing in some frozen mysis. If he starts eating the mysis, you can slowly start weening him off live and more mysis.

G-luck!
