Regal Angel Question

Grrrrr.... well my little guy still wont touch nori, frozen, or pellets. He only will hit the clams. How often should I feed him? Im using the lil neck clams.

Any thoughts or getting him to eat something else???

try the red life line frozen food.....i just recently bought my regal and in 2 days it ate everything...even the dainichi reef veggie pellets.

I got my regal about three or so months ago. When I first got her she would not eat anything. So I feed clams. She devoured them. After a week I would remove the meat from the shell. Then I would press my homemade mush into it. It tricked her, she ate it perfectly. After that she will eat ANYTHING. She now will eat any food I have from my hand. As for keeping them with other angels, it can be done. Just be 100% sure your regal is perfectly acclimated to life in a glass box. Then add another angel. I would reccomend one of the more docile angels. I now have a potters, flame, and Majestic with my regal. they all get along great. Just go slow with the regal and be sure she is comfortable.

Is your regal ina 55 gallon tank?
If so, DO NOT ADD ANOTHER ANGEL. They need large territories. IMO multiple angels should only be kept in very large systems as they NEED space. Cramped space=grumpy mean fish

I got a Maldives Yellow Belly from my LFS. I recently lost him to velvet. The 6 months prior to him dying, he ate only clams. He would not even look at NLS pellets, flake, or anything else I introduced. It took alot of dedication to keep up with this fish. I was more than a little bummed out when he passed. Don;t know if I am willing to try another.

Michael_cb,

Thanks. That sounds interesting. One question so if you didnt chop up the clam and you dropped it into the tank with the mush inside, how did you keep the other fish from eating it til the regal got to it??? My clowns, jawfish, wrasse all attack food faster than my regal.

Hi, My first two Regals refused to eat and starved. My third one ate after a couple of days. Never believe that a Regal is eating unless you see it with your own eyes. Trouble is that you can't find them locally here in Houston and I had to order all of mine. My angelfish book tells people that most Regals never eat in captivity and they should be left in the sea. My first two were from the Red sea and my last one was one of the cheaper one that was not a Red Sea. Got the one that is eating from Petsolutions.com. I have read that it is best not to get one too big or two small. About 3 inches is good. The ones much larger are used to eating only sponge and may not be eager to try other foods. Lesley

If he is hungrey, he will get some of that clam. You can also drop 2 down. In my tank the clams are cleaned down to the shell in 5 minutes or less. In the first week I had my regal , he was a little timid with it, but as time went on he got more bold and devours now. Try marine 2 frozen green cubes. I let mine thaw out and break it apart with by hands. My regal loves that stuff.

Good news!! My regal ate 4 pieces of mysis and pecked at some marine 2 today....

So my question is..is that enough do I dare feed any clams??

Just ordered one from Diver's Den due to arrive Wed. Stated that it was eating Mysis and Brine. I've always had luck with their fish. My question is about the clam. Years ago I used to use cracked clams from my clown trigger as a treat. I think I put a bad one in because shortly after eating it it developed what looked like septicemia with red streaking and died. I lost another fish, tuskfish, that day too - also red streaks on body.

Do you ever worry about introducing disease when adding live clams? I am afraid to do it again.

2 Questions:

If my regal just just ate 4 pieces of mysis for the first time due I continue feeding clams? or try to wean him off and eat the mysis?

Second, has anyone kept clams in their refuge and just plucked them into the main tank when ready for the fish to eat one?

I's funny... I must be on a luck streak here... My yellow belly is now eating frozen mysid out of the water column... So it took like 5 months.... :)

I put several clams in a Deep Sand bed separate but in series with the DT. Clams lived > 1 year and stirred the bed. The mussels died within weeks to months. I happened to catch them. Today I worry supermarket clams introducing disease as I mentioned above.

I just got a 2'' Regal myself today and it was eating Mysis from the LFS.

I brought him home, put him in the QT, fed him some Mysis and he devoured it. I then decided to feed Formula Two flakes and he ate that too! I'm so excited!!!

I hope it isn't cyanide caught and dies of unexplained reasons later because I've become attached!

Rob,
Don' get discouraged!!! He will eat in time. Mine for the only ate clams and veggie bites for 3 months... try getting forumula 2 frozen... Mine loves that now..... Mine is 5 months old, and now eats pellets, mysid, clam... Pretty much anything... Be patient...

Darth, I have to respectfully disagree with your assertion that a regal that is not eating will eventually eat. Most do not, that is why it is SO important to get one that displays a healthy interest in food from the start. You should never take a chance that you will be able to bring one around. IMHO

dvmsn,
I adressed Rob, who's regal is eating clam. Just as mine did. I fully agree that you should visually see all fish eating before u buy.

The fact that his regal is eating clams is a great sign!! :)

The Maldives Regal from Diver's Den arrived last Wed. THough it stated "eating frozen mysis and brine", the fish has shown no interest. As suggested, I started adding a cracked clam. The fish is eating this but not aggressively and picks only from time to time. It tried red and purple nori, soft shell crab and even live brine without success. It even avoids the pieces of clam that break away from the shell.

Can I sustain this fish on clam alone? Does anyone know of a way to attach other foods to the clam shell? This 5" fish is also alone in a 92 gal and I've never seen it pick at the live rock. Should I move it to the display tank?

Thanks in advance for your help
