Regional Club Frag Swap - Guidelines & Rare Consideration

I'm told that true blue and yellow zoos are still pretty rare. I'll set a minimum of 4 polyps for an entry.

I'm trying to get enough frags together to get a bonus ticket, and I just wanted to see if I needed 12 frags or 15 (12+3 to enter). Which did you intend?

Thanks!

You must bring at least 3 frags to qualify for a spot to pick during each round. Here are some sample scenarios that will earn you Bonus Tickets:

12 common frags = 1 bonus ticket

15 common frags = 1 bonus ticket

24 common frags = 2 bonus tickets

15 common frags + 1 rare frag = 1 bonus ticket

12 common frags + 2 rare frags = 2 bonus tickets

4 rare frags = 2 bonus tickets

HTH:)

Karl,

would this get into the rare category?

frag swap

frag swap

I would love to come to the frag swap but I am not sure what would be the best way to participate. I just bought an established 240 gallon reef tank and have only a few simple mushrooms and polyps. I dont have the slightest clue how to frag them either. Would I be best served to pay the 15 dollar fee, or do I need to go and buy frags to participate. I am fairly broke but would like to participate without mooching. Is paying the 15 dollars ok. And how many frags do you get by A. bringing some and B. paying the fee. Thanks for taking the time to help the new people. I greatly appreciate it.

Here is a picture of the reef I bought, however about 75% of the corals were sold before I got it.

Recap

Recap

We're just a few days away from the event. I just wanted to recap the guidelines for this Saturday.

Hi Everyone,

As promised, here are the guidelines for the Regional Club Frag Swap on November 4th. Some of you will notice that the structure is identical to how BAR conducted theirs back in February. For those that are seasoned frag swap veterans, this will be second nature.

To be entitled to participate in the swap, you must bring at least 3 frags along with your prepayment for lunch. If you’re unable to contribute frags, you may ‘Buy In’ to the swap by donating $15 (which will also be pooled into the proceeds for charity). Again, this is open to everyone that is and isn’t a club member.

Please bring your corals:

1) Pre-fragged
Preferably, pre-fragged with enough time to encrust/attach onto something. If the frags you are bringing are fresh cut, please frag the coral the night before to give the frag time to stop sliming and sloughing, and to improve survivability before packing it to bring to the swap.

2) In a plastic container or double bagged
I highly recommend the Rubbermaid TakeAlongs containers, which never leak. The containers by Glad aren’t nearly as leak proof. Double bagged LFS bags are fine as well, but please NO ziploc bags.

3) Labeled
Please do your best to label each frag with a Sharpie. Please include the frag’s common name and/or scientific name, brief tank placement description (i.e. low, 250W), and your RC handle.

I also suggest you bring some kind of ice chest/cooler for the corals that you pick during the swap. Blue LED flashlights are also handy for quick decision making.

Pick Order
Each participant will be given a nametag and Letter, which will be the group with whom you’ll pick with.
Corals will be grouped according to type.
Groups will rotate through the picking area with each person picking 1 coral.
Bonus tickets will pick first in each round.
The order of groups picking will go up, then down. For example, if there are 3 groups the order would be:
Bonus, A, B, C…
Bonus, …C, B, A
Bonus, A, B, C…

Bonus round/bonus tickets
Bonus tickets are obtained by bringing 'rare' corals, or by bringing multiple other corals. For each Bonus ticket, you get one pick in a Bonus round which is in place of your normal picking group in that round. If you have multiple bonus tickets, you can only use one in each bonus round. Once you are out of bonus tickets, you will revert to your regular picking group for the next round. If a bonus round has too many people in it, it will be split into two just to make the picking area less frantic.

One bonus ticket is given for each of the following:
2 'rare' frags
12 'normal' frags

I’m really looking forward to seeing you all on the 4th!

Best regards,

Karl

I'll have Reef Nutrition products for sale at the swap. It will be discounted for this event. Sorry, no 32oz, live rotifers or live mysid, will be offerred. I will bring some of the clams books as well, but I can't discount them beyond the price on my site, sorry.

To get an idea of what I need to bring, please feel free to chime in here in this thread :)

Reserve a bottle of Roti-feast for me :D
I may even get some phyto, havent used that stuff for more than 6 months, but would like to boost my pod population.
Gresham, did anyone talk to you about bringing a frag for me with you?

-Justin

Nope, but I can, if they can hook up with me tomorrow. I'm grabbing a hotel friday night near Elk Grove, I'll be leaving Oakland around 10pm. I'll be in the East Bay during the day, I suspect.

For the entry minimum (3)...yes. However, for Bonus Tickets, they cannot be counted twice. For example:

10 common frags + 2 rare frags = 1 bonus ticket

I won't be able to include the 2 rares as part of the 12 for another bonus ticket;)

I was thinking I could bring 4 rare frags and get 2 bonus tickets or 2 chances to pick from the rare table.

Yes! If all you brought were the 4 rare frags, you'll get your 2 bonus tickets. After you use those up, than you can resume your spot in the normal picking order in the following rounds.

Hey Gresham, could you provide me a link for the clam book you are referring too? I have the Daniel Knop book, but it's a bit dry. Thanks!

I have no idea what is rare.

I have no idea what is rare.

I have monticap, green with purple ridge. Orange monticap. all sorts of acros, blue tipped, green tipped. I buy things that look pretty at the shops, and pay pretty pennies for them. Now I am looking to bring two rare frags to the swap and have no idea what will count. Any suggestions?
