Hi all. Take your time with your tank. You will experience all the regular things. Diatoms, cyanobacteria and probably hair algae. All normal stuff.Don't go crazy about it.Let you tank mature a little and you will be good to go.

Enjoy your tank. Isn't that is what it is all about.

I agree. I went through a cyano bloom for seemingly no reason, every day in the AM the sand would be white, by the end of the day a few large areas would be covered in red cyano. Parameters were all OK. Told myself to relax and not jump to the "red slime remover" products a friend recommended for fear of harming my healthy corals. Cut back on feeding my fish by 50% a day to be safe, in less than a week it cleared up, went back to normal feedings and it never came back.

Sometimes things can take care of them self. Except gsp, aptasia, and pulsing xenia...these will just take over =) I never try to add anything unnecessary to my tank.

My biggest issue is when people do ask for help and they are told they need to buy another piece of equipment or add some chemical to "fix" the problem.. Everybodies tank is different, what worked for 1 members system may or maynot work for somebody elses..

I was starting to get the same issue that you mentioned Dexter.. My sand was rustish/red by the end of the day and white again in the AM.. So I changed out my GFO and carbon, killed my tank lights for 3 days and ran my skimmer wet to pull as much stuff out as possible.. That was 1 month ago and the problem hasn't returned..

Good tank keeping practices can clear up most of the problems faced.. Don't overfeed, don't overstock and have a filtration system sufficant for your sized tank..
