Reminder: Snails can clog your pipes

When I got home yesterday from work, I heard water splashing sound coming from the fish room. My heart immediately sunk. I got there, and there was no water on the floor, so I resumed breathing. There was a lot of water coming down the E pipe. After investigation and attempt to remove the gate valve, I was able to knock something loose. It was 1" Mexican Turbo. I have toothless overflow box, but I have a cover made of egg crate. It is not perfect, however. I should have installed strainers per some suggestions here.

It's even more important to not use open pipes, but use some type of strainer to prevent this in the future...

Great example of why a backup pipe is important! It doesn't matter if you cleaned your pipe yesterday if the snail crawls in today!

Strainers on pipe inlets are a mixed bag - they keep most of the bigger stuff out, but they also tend to collect stuff, and I've had several snails crawl on the strainer and apparently get stuck and die.

I just ordered couple of strainers, because I don't know what else I can do. I have the overflow box covered with egg crate. I am afraid if I use fine net, it will prevent floating stuff from going down to the sump.

My overflow box is particularly difficult to create something for it. 22X7. 5 1.5" pipes. A cross frame support doing through. I simply couldn't make a tight fit when the tank was empty. Now with limited access, it will be extremely difficult to do anything better than what I have don.

Also, if you have certain types of pumps, viz. the Iwaki, one tiny dove snail can perfectly fit the impeller notch, vastly impeding water flow. If your pump has slowed to limp flow---check it out. While you're at it, a few hours soak in white vinegar won't hurt.

Yeah - I've come to the conclusion that livestock causes too many problems - I'm just going to stick with rocks!
