Remora skimmer on 24g Aquapod. Wow

wow thanks i have a auqa pod 24 and was wanting a skimmer but really didnt think i could get one in till now but i still have to grab a mh lite im looking at the viper 150 also did you guys switch out stock pumps with the maxy jet 1200 i have one and wanted to try it but how hard is this to do?????

hi Mike,

the hardest thing about switching out the pump is simply removing it. That 1/2" clear tube coming up from the pump has a black plastic elbow where the water returns into the tank. Just pull the elbow attached to the main tank wall, back into the sump. It is connected by a 1/2" line that goes down to the pump. If you pull up on that 1/2"tube and the power line, the pump will come right up.

You might consider using Maxi 900 instead of the 1200 for in the tank. The 1200 uses 20W of power for 1110 gph, the 900 uses 8.5 watts for 870 gph. Watts=Heat. More than a few people choose the 900 for just this reason.

I'm still using the stock pump in the sump and it's weak. I'm awaiting two Maxi 900's. One will go in the sump, and the other in the tank for recirculation. I ordered a Hydor FLO

I'm going to overclock the Hydor FLO (by putting too much water flow through it), but can you really trust the directions? It will go on the in-tank pump to spray water all over the tank. And since I'm getting extreme, I ordered a Phosban Reactor to replace my home made unit.

I couldn't decide if it would be better to filter out phosphates (to keep algae down) using some type of phosphate soak material, or carbon (to reduce the organics). Someone asked, "Why not filter out both" and provided this link for Seachem Seagel Filter Media

I will hang this unit external, next to the Remora, and it will use the cheap pump that came with the unit. I don't need big flow through this unit.

Also, since there will no longer be a carbon restriction in the return line, more water will flow through the sump.

So that will be my next addition next week. Rats, I'm running out of space to hang things on.

So...
1. Cheap pump that comes with the tank will circulate water into carbon reactor.
2. Maxi 900 will pump water out of the sump into the tank.
3. Maxi 900 in tank will have rotating collar to increase circulation..all the days of it's life.
4. I will marvel at this great wonder.

Zoe the figures on the MaxiJets you have are in L/HR not GPH.
The 900 is rated at 230 g/h and the 1200 @ 295 g/h.

hyper. MANY MANY Thanks! I just grabbed those numbers when I was preparing them for this thread and it had confused me a bit as to why the Hydor would have been so far out of capacity to handle those small powerheads. Now I can circulate the tank in peace!

Hey Crew,
I have the remora on my 20g and have been totally happy with it. It is HOB of the tank, so there were a few microbubbles that I took care of with the remora prefilter sized to the 1200pump that I am using. The combination is incredible. Totally clear water.

I suggest placing a small cover over the left chamber of the skimmer, as it will drastically reduce noise (i cut up one of the magnet cards that i got with a recent order of chinese food).

Lastly, I found the remora on eBay for about $168 (free shipping) with the 1200 pump. Saved a few bucks...

i have been thinking of getting this nano cube tank, check it out...does anyone have one? i would get the one with the 70watt hqi bulb. the picture they show has an optional light, the light that comes with it is built into the top like the other pic... i think... anyone know anything about this tank? any advice?

That's the exact unit that I own. I really works great. All the posts I have put in here have been regarding this unit.

I especially like the night LCD's. They put out a really deep blue color, close to a black light, and it makes many corals fluoresce. No complaints on this end...

If you can fit the maxi-jet 1200 then you should be good to go. I don't have a 12g pod but would thing the area in the back should be the same. Someone here that have both could comment on this would be great.

My remora hasn't been working lately, and i dont know why. It makes bubbles, but they dont go up the collection cup... what do i do? I have cleaned it, and it helped a little, but not much...

Quick question here:

How long did it take to collect skimmate for new Remora? I know instruction said it takes 1-2 weeks to break in but I'd a chance to start a new CSS 65 on thursday night and it was able to collect dark skimmate next day.

I'm looking at another 24g tank and narrowed down to 2 tanks:
1) AP with 70W MH (I think this is the same one you have)
2) NC with Viper 150W MH (no LEDs)

My question is--do you feel 70W is enough light or you would have prefer 150W?

I would have to say that the 70W system on my tank puts out more than enough light for everyone in the tank. Clams on the sand are happy and healthy. I have SPS, softies of all kinds and they are all doing very well. If there's something the 70W is not doing, I'm not aware of what it is.
