remora vs remora pro questions

Are there any major differences between the remora and the remora pro, other than the pump it comes with and the fact that the remora pro is a little bigger? Do you think if I upgrade the remora pump to a mag3 it will produce good results on a 37 cube with 5gal sump? Just wanted some opinions. Thanks.

really the best thing you can do is sell it and move up to one of the modern hob skimmers that actually works worth a damn, without having a huge mag pump in your tank, and no obnoxious sound that goes along with overdriving the remora/remora pro skimmers.

for a 37g I would look at the WM H1, SWC bh-500, octo bh-2000, or octo bh-100f(new 2009 model with otp NOT RESUN pump!!!)

Thanks for the recommendations. I really want a decent insump skimmer, but am having trouble finding one in the $100 range. I am fine with used, but really can't spend much over $100 because of new expensive due to a baby. Any recommendations?

I was always pretty happy with the Remora/MJ 1200. The real trick is just to keep it clean. I finally added a sump and went with a larger in-sump skimmer (Vertex IN-100,) but that was mainly just to get the skimmer out of my DT, not due to any performance issues withy the Remora. A lot of people bash the AquaC skimmers but I always had good luck with Remoras and the EV series as well.

i could never gget my remora pro with a mag 7, mj1200, mag 3 to work without skimming as wet as it could go and cleaning the cup near daily. i would get the octopus hob with a sicce

FWIW, I have a remora nano that worked great for the first 6 months and then all of a sudden stopped working. I've cleaned it multiple times and have it set as low as posible and I barely get any slimmate. If I do, it is mostly wet and it takes about 2 weeks to get maybe about 1/8 inch.

^^ thats how mine worked.
i would go with the octo, i replaced my remora pro with a euroreef rs80 which was good, and comparable to the octo 110

if u want external get the recirc

Bubble magus NAC 6 for $138 @ nuocean,
500 lph air injection, meshwheel impellar for smaller bubbles, bubble plate, submerged wedge outlet, pump in skimmer body for small footprint.
this will smoke the octo nwb 110, and vertex in-80 or in-100, which both only get 400-420 lph air injection.

Great recommendations. Can anyone second any of these opinions? I think I narrowed it down to either a Octopus NWB 110 or a Bubble Magnus NAC6.

I saw an Eshopps HOB in my LFS. It is working great. It's on a tank with non-photosynthetic corals so it's fed phytoplankton regularly and seems to be doing a good job. I had a Remora Pro and liked it. The Octopus looks good BUT it seems everyone that has one has had to mod it quite a bit. With so many people doing the mods it doesn't seem like the research and development was very good on the Octos

Not to hijack, but I'm having the SAME problem with my Remora (w/ MJ1200) that I have hanging in my sump. I've tried cleaning it out, switching to a new MJ1200, taking the O-Ring off to skim as wet as possible... and I still only get 1/8'' a day?! Could it be that the water level is about two inches below the rim in my sump?

As for the OP's post, please suggest some high-quality skimmers that don't cost an arm + leg. :)

remora don't work well with pumps they come with like remora with mj 1200 you have to swap with rio 1400 or next size bigger and when i had remora pro i used rio 2500 on it and it skimmed great but I would check into different skimmer.

have you guys cleaned the injection nozzle? that's what works for me...
OH Yea!!! Multiple times. I have also taken the pump and skimmer apart (basic maintenance) soaked it all in vinigar, rinsed and brushed out the injection nozzle. Nothing. The injector nozzle does not appear to be clogged. Even called tech suppoort and followed thier directions but to no avail. By the way, they were quite friendly to work with so +1 for that.
