Remote Deep Sand Bed

Mike I was obviously referencing our conversation about DSBs when starting this thread. I knew you have been using the play sand in your DSB with much success. I think there is an overall negative opinion in sw aquaria towards "playsand" I have heard it over and over on RC. However I also find people like yourself with positive results. So I guess the verdict is still out on that...

I agree with you on keeping the system running as much "natural" as possible. I do not like the idea of adding chemical supplements to force my water parameters in a certain direction. I do feel that the concept of adding carbon compounds in the form of vodka is creating a natural reaction within the aquarium. I know the key to not letting it crash is to drink in moderation....or was that dose in moderation...LOL

I am going to start dosing vodka today and see where this leads me. I am going to watch PH closely as a reduction in O2 in the water column should reduce the PH. As well as testing Nitrates daily and watching my skimmate to see if I notice my skimmate getting darker. Step #2 if I do not start seeing noticable results with the dosing will be to continue dosing and add a RDSB to the system.

lmao, I missed that... :C).

on a side note, I always want to ask on the vodka threads if grey goose is preferred over absolute... :C). Maybe you could test it out!

Yea, it costs pennies a lb, where as when relabeled and sold at lfs it is $2/lb. The threads with people arguing over why LFS sand is better/different are rather funny. The best is the "jagged edges" of playsand cuts micro-organisms... I wonder if those people take sandpaper to their live rock.

It is however pretty hard to find "white" playsand these days... some crazy people think the sand manufacture(s) stopped sending white playsand (southdown et al) to lowes/hd and the like because they were loosing to much money from the fish industry.

good luck with the vodka, resist the temptation to make large dosing increases. thats when the $*** hits the fan (two month in).

I think the switch to Grey Goose from Absolute is where I will have issues with dosing increases. I dose myself heavily with Grey Goose every weekend...LOL. - Phil

If its clear white playsand you are looking for, there is a place on Canton RD (forgot the name). Right across from Springfield HS. This past summer when researching into playsand for my tank I saw that they had 3 different variety of playsand they were selling. One of them was completely white, didn't get it because it failed the vinegar test. After knowing what I now know about playsand, wish I would have bought some. Heck of a lot cheaper than sand at LFS. I'm sure they will have the same stuff there again this summer.

Its Canton Rd nursery, The nursery on Canton Rd :). I checked into alot of the sands and in this region its mostly local sources (no local reefs). I contacted Oldcastle the company that purchased Southdown (and just about every other aggregate company in the U.S) and they said that they do not offer any playsand that is argonite based in the U.S. I called most of the large suppliers and had no luck, but if you go to Hawaii quikcrete sells some argonite sand only in Hawaii.

I thought I liked you guys for a reason... I prefer to dose with the cheap rock-gut 110 proof Vodka.

OUCH!!!! I need the Goose or when I am pinching my pennies I dose Skyy. I am also showing zero Nitrates, but that is after some heavy dosing of scotch this weekend...now if I can just get the darn aquarium to zero Nitrates.
