any thoughts/ideas on how to properly make one and hook it up?

i am contemplating using the sand out of my 135 and putting it into a 5g bucket. after that, i'm kinda lost. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

What type of system are you running, and what are your current mechanical filtration methods. ?

What is your net water volume?

Are you using any PH04 removers?

What is your goal for your tank? i.e. soft or hard corals?

This will help when answering your question more directly.

The best resource is this very good reading.

Dr. Shimek's "Deep Sand Beds. Theory and Practice"

It is a muched talked about topic and people have had success both ways. At the end of the day it is a personal choice and thru trial and error that you will find the method that best suits your tank and the goals you are aiming for.

In the Oct/Nov '07 issue of Coral Magazine there are three in depth articles on DSB filtration. Two by Dr. Shimek and one by Anthony Calfo. I don't know if this magazine is available at newsstands. I have a subscription to it.

1. it's a 54g rr corner. mixed reed, just starting to get into sps. right now mostly zoas, some shrooms/rics/yumas, few lps. downsized from my 135. as far as filtration, i have about 20-25lbs of ls, and 100+ lbs of lr. sump is a wet/dry. all bio balls are removed, and replaced with foam to silence the trickle sound. also running a turbolfotor 1000multi skimmer

2. net water volume is about 55g

3. no phosphate removers, but i am running carbon in my phosban reactor

4. i would like to foray deeper into sps.

my other possibility is to use my 30g frag tank as a remote fuge, but i need to figure out a way for the plumbing.

does this help?

Yes it does help
I've always considered more volume is better.
the foam in your w/d might be problematic.

the fuge will help mainly IMO due to the extra volume plus u can throw in some more LR for filtration.

why would the foam be a problem? nitrate trap?
yup- if not changed constantly.
Perhaps u can throw in some LR there.

the same as socks w/o changing
