Removed My Macro Algea

I am very happy. I noticed pretty quickly after I started using this stuff I wasn't getting very good polyp extension. I have removed my cheato. Within 24 hours my polyp extension was noticeably better.

do you think it may have been do to the algea removing to much nutrients from the tank? weird how one tank can do bad from something another tank needs.

I found that article in Coral that explained the process. Basically, the algae release substances into the water that feed bacteria. This causes the bacteria to bloom. The bacteria out compete the corals for oxygen, which kills the corals. The Coral article referenced a scientific paper which conducted an experiment were algae was introduced to tanks with corals. 100% bleached and die in the tanks with algae. The control tanks corals did fine. I didn't notice any decline in algae when I ran it and my corals looked noticeably worse, this is a no brainer for me.

I had opposite results. I always had some form of algae in my tank... hair algae, or bubble.... 1 week after I added chaeto to my tank I never had it again. Its been a great thing for me! I'll never run another tank without it. As for polyp extension, my tri color, tort and various other acros have great extension. I believe some tanks are just different since we all have very different setups. Sux that yours worked out that way, but then again if you never noticed any difference with it... then who cares :)

i was just thinking how does the algae compete for oxygen when algeas use c02 and release 02. the only time it uses 02 is at night when the lights are off, but if you light it 24/7 it never uses 02.

The bacteria competes for o2. It causes an algae bloom basically the same way that vodka dosing does, by providing complex carbons. I think it will take a little more time to tell if I get algae blooms.

i wounder why so many people are dosing vodka and sugar to create the bacteria if it is going to be a problem. iknow alot of people on the sps forum use another product to do the same thing, can't remember the name

I don't know about you but it seems like a lot of people dose vodka to get that lighter look in their corals which I personally correlate with stress.
