Removing currently inuse canister filter

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone is experienced with removing canister filter?
Am running a 75g FOWLR tank I have about 8 fish and about 80-100kg of LR and Prizm protein skimmer, the tank is running for about nearly 2yrs now and stable. Planning to build a new setup by December but in the means time still got to bare with this.

Today the canister was leaked because of blockage so I’ve did some cleaning, seem to be ok now, am wondeirng if I should turn it back on and risk leakage or toxic coming out of it after cleaning? I really want to remove the canister altogether but worry that the tiny skimmer alone wont be able to do the job. Does anyone have experienced with turning this thing off?

The biggest worry would be that the canister filter has become the primary source of biological filtration (ie, ammonia).


I would not remove it altogether unless the fish load was really low.


I would remove 1/3 of the media today, 1/3 of it in 4-7 days, and then remove the whole thing in another 4-7 days ------ this is just to be VERY cautious.

Well, it's been off since last night...would the bacteria already be dead by now? turning it back on will it just pump nasty staff back into the tank? do you guys think the LR and the small prizm skimmer is enough without having ammonia spike?
