Removing Ricordea

I have this large colony of Orange Ricordeas on the sandbed and occasionally one will break away from the group. About a year ago one did and ended up on a high rock, it has gotten very big and split a few times, the problem is that its very close to my red planet. And I have heard ricodeas are not good for SPS.

So I would like to remove them but how, the rock cannot be removed from the tank and when I tried to scape off a small one it just recessed into a hole and there was no way to scrape it off.

Any ideas ?

That's what I tried with one of the small ones but it practically disintegrated as i scraped, leaving goo floating though the tank.

I battled mushrooms (blue, red/green-striped, hairy green) in my 90 gallon tank and decided I wouldn't move any into my 125. Then I bought an orange ric from you anyway because it looked awesome and now the one is 5- but I'm not complaining because they look awesome! Anyway, I tried razor blade, boiling H20 injection, kalk paste, and putty. What I found worked best is to cut them down as much as possible (remove whatever you cut off) and take some reef epoxy and cover up the remnant. You can also shade/sting it out with something like a euphyllia, but I'm guessing you don't want something like that close to your red planet.

Glad you're enjoying them, they do look great and I dont mind them on the sand bed, just need to get these off the high rock work.

I use a syringe. Cutting the big chunks off first is preferable. I cut the pumps . Then apply to anything i want dead. Don't go crazy. 15 minutes should do the trick. You dont want globs of it leftover. I sometimes will turkey baste excess away.

Ugh, what a mess

Ugh, what a mess

Was able to remove 3 total from the rock but what a mess. I turned up the carbon for awhile after.

The longer I reef the more I dislike any type of soft corals, xenia, kenya tree, ricordeas, they have all been a big pain in my azz.

I need a beer

When they find the right conditions some of the softies can take over. It almost seems smart to introduce them on an "island rock" to see if they are going to be real happy in that specific tank and possibly take over. I can't grow gsp and xenia and most people are weeding it out. Specific conditions can make a HUGE difference if a species takes off.
