Removing Star Polyps form rock

OK.. so my GSP's have exploded and are now encroaching and damaging the Pocillapora. I have moved it up a few times, but it is running out of room. how do I trim these back?

BTW, GFLATT, these I got from you, so this is all your fault!!!!

I am having the same problem with tulip anemonies which is also Gary's fault!! Buy I was warned and I never dreamed 2 cute tiny polyps could turn into such a demon!

I would think GSP would be hard to erradicate because they come back from the tiniest dab left behind.

Angela:
I feel your pain, I too got ONE (tulip anemone); I thought it would look nice is a quiet corner of the tank, now I have hundreds (literally). Gary apologized for inflecting this on me, but he, like me, thought they looked nice. He really does feel bad about this situation.
Gary recommends a thick Kalk paste put in their mouth, he say's it has worked for him and they don't come back.
Just got my new mixing/transfer pump, so first comes the Kalk paste, then a big water change.
Hope everything else is going well in your aquatic world.

Rick

Yall might also want to think about just taking the rock out, breaking it up and taking it to the LFS for credit. You should get enough credit for more rock and a couple of new corals to boot. I know.....easier said than done:)

Chris

I bought a bicolor angel to take care of my majano anemones. I had a few of those tulip anemones and he ate those too. It took him a few months to start eating them but the tank is nearly clear now. I had hundreds of majano before. I have never seen him pick at anything else either. I know that they are a bit risky in a reef but sometimes these anemones get so out of hand that it takes desperate measures to get rid of them.

Doc, The rock they have happened upon is a VERy large piece that has several other corals on it including a rather large Monti cap. removing the rock will have to be a last resort. it is a rock that has a 10" diameter and is aobut 15" long. Can they be scraped off with a razor?

I scraped some off with a butter knife one time fairly successfully. Of course that also requires taking the rock out and is a labor intensive, tedious process but it can be done.

Scraping might help reduce the numbers, but like Chris said, to try to get it all will be a very tedious project and there is still no guarantee...

I'm having trouble with tulip anemonies also.....should I blame Gary as well?

Why not. One more can't hurt:D. In my defense, I did warn everyone about those little monsters :)(unless they got them unintentionally). I thought they were pretty cool when I first got them. I'm gonna blame coralreefing. He gave me my first two:D. We had no idea of the terror we were unleashing on the world. I recently threw a dozen Peppermint shrimp in the 120 that had tons of Aips, Majano's, and Tulip's. Within three weeks, there wasn't a single one left (still not). I need to try the same for the 125 now to see if it works twice for me. Problem is, I'll be feeding the 125 more often now because of the solarensis wrasse (loves Arctipods), so the Peppermints won't have to search as much for food... They devoured my two rock anemones, too.

Gary.. I dont want to eradicate, just trim them back. sorta like pruning them to keep them in their place. then can go the other direction all they wish as it is a drop off. I will try the knife direction. all i need to remove is about a 3 square inch area to keep them out of a coral.

Speaking of trimming corals, I just dropped off another batch of Xenia at AC. got me one of those alveopora's.

I noticed that....I was going to take them a boat load on Monday and get some more zoas....maybe they'll have a big run on Xenia this weekend.

In his defence he did tell me they can get crazy but just like when I was a teenager I had the "it will never happen to me" mentatily! I dumped in about 8 peps from a reeftopia order a few months ago and 7 from the order last week. I joes juiced a ton of Aptasia 2x and they seem to think it is fertalizer  So far my manjos, tulips and aptasias are all kickin it so I wonder if one of my fish are making snacks of the shrimp. I never see them either but I think they are mostly nocturnal anyways.

Sorry for the hijack!! I wonder if you scrape off the main part and spread alk paste on the left overs it would burn them? What about a syringe of boiling water? Just throwing out ideas.

Better call before you take anything in. I took in some table top this week without calling since I was going anyways and they didn't have any room. I will just save it for the swap I guess.

Table top what....Acropora?

I thought those tulip anemones were cute and wanting to have them in my tank. I had a lot from Gary's rock, along with aiptasia and majano anemones. It was a pain at first since they were everywhere. But my Peppermints wiped ALL my anemones outta my tank. I was told that they wouldn't touch anything but aiptasia. I have no anemones left in my tank.....After they were all gone, so did my Peppermints, they just disappeared.....
GSP are hard to rid of,,,,I know someone who used Superglue to keep them at bay..... :)

Yes Chris, Acropora. I accidently killed my huge ones center out with the overflow return hitting it and getting high does of PH and Calcium blasting it every night before I realized what I had done :(.

No, doodoobrown is who it came from. good thing is I have TONS of fraggs now. I saved every tiny tip and glued them all up everywhere and only lost 1 tiny frag out of about 50. I don't think I have ever gotten a table top from you have I? If so I have killed it because nothing in my tank is branching out the way a top does

Sorry again to side track the thread!
