Repairing Acrylic

Can a tank with a crack in the acrylic be repaired? Is there anything that can be used to seal the crack? Can you bond/glue/etc. another piece of acrylic over the crack to keep it from spreading and make it water right? Thanks!

Also, I hate Fedex!!!!

Did I mention how much I hate Fedex?

I ordered a custom sump from Building an Obsession (BAO). They built it to perfection and shipped it to me using Fedex. It was packed very nicely. It was delivered with a large crack in it. The crack is about the size of my hand.

I contacted BAO and they immediately began work on a new sump and shipped it to me. It arrived last night with the box looking like it had been rode hard and put away wet. There were two large gashes in the box. Here is a photo of one of them:

The sump had a chip in the lower corner right next to the seam between the bottom and two sides.

BAO has been outstanding to work with. Customer service is excellent and the two sumps that were delivered were excellent other than damage caused by shipping. The sump's were both well packed. Both of them had multiple stickers saying fragile and this end up. Both of them were delivered to my house sitting on their side with holes in the outer boxes. I even took receipt of the second box at delivery and pointed out the two holes in the box. The Fedex guy said it wasn't his fault and that is how he received them. He said this while setting the box on its side despite multiple this end up stickers.

So now I am left with two cracked sumps. I don't feel right asking BAO to send another one when they have already sent out a replacement. It is not their fault how crappy Fedex is. In addition, if I ask for a replacement again it will be another few weeks until it arrives - hopefully in one piece.

The first one's crack is above the water line. The second sump's chip is below the water line in the corner/section of the sump that houses the return pump. I filled it with water and it is currently water tight but am worried the vibration from the pump/weakened structure could cause a leak in the future.

What do you guys think? I was thinking about trying to repair the first sump as the current crack is above the water line. How do you repair acrylic?

Thanks for any help.

Did I mention my feelings about Fedex?

You'll also need to drill a small hole at the end of the crack, to keep it from running...before you do any 'repairs'

The damage wasn't your fault, wasn't BAOs fault. I'm sure they had full coverage insurance.

They will be reimbursed by FexEx. Call them and get a new sump!

Without the feedback of damages, FexEx and their drivers will never change. The few weeks will be nothing compared to the lifetime of the setup and peace of mind you have with an undamaged sump.

agreed. They should be fully insured on their orders. It sucks, because they have to waste time filling out some paperwork, but it isn't a huge deal. You can go to your local Fedex authority and mention that this has happened twice. You can also speak to their main office and do a customer formal complaint.

None of the shipping company's employees care about your stuff. I've heard from multiple people working in varying companies state that when a package has a fragile sticker on it, they are extra rough with that package. The corporate companies don't do anything to ensure quality handling.

I would send photos to BAO and let them know. If you are willing to make this one work, just let them know that too. But nothing will change if they don't know about it.

You could post pictures on social media and tag fedex...

Thanks for all your answers. I have filed a complaint with Fedex and am going to attempt to patch the sump. BAO gave me multiple options and I think patching is the best option at this point.
