Replacing Chaeto Compartment

So I finally got on the vinegar dosing regimin and after only 3 weeks or so I've dropped from 80-100 PPM nitrates to around 40. I'm logging it and will post the records after I confirm the drop.

Anyway, so I was trying to grow Chaeto to combat nitrates but now that this is working I'm wondering if I shouldn't just convert that LARGE section of my sump to something else? It's roughly a 2ft by 1ft by 1ft depth compartment and the flow is very gentle through it (bottom up baffles on either side). I circulate the water with a 10gph jet. Should I fill it with marine pure balls? I'd like to ditch the chaeto so I can ditch the lights.

Suggestions welcomed.

I did that but then switched back because I couldn't remember to dose everyday.

I used 2 of the large marinepure blocks

i have Red Sea 350 and the middle part of my sump which is more than 10% of the tank volume i believe is all Miracle Mud in containers and Cheato and Dragons Breath... where the sux used to be i have about 100 Marine Pure balls ... no skimmer ... Po4 0.13 and No3 7-8... rock steady...dosing 2 part Bionic...Acropower.. Bionic Mag as needed...my fish are overweight but i like them like that...have about 15 fish and wont disclose what for sake of not having TANG POLICE after me

I won't ask you to disclose but will advise you that all posts get pinged for location. See I just don't think the chaeto is doing anything for me. I have to blast it with light and it's not growing downward into the open space. I wonder if I were to put more bricks in if the dosing would influence the bacteria to grow there as well...

As for remembering to dose, I am scared to death of a doser free flowing into the tank. I've thought about getting a really cheap doser but having one dose from the bottle into a cup and another from that cup to another and another into the tank... Not sure if failure is at all likely if I do that. Also thinking about making a container that drips into the tank. Need to research that a bit more.

As for leaving that tank portion empty -_-. No, my OCD will not allow me not to tinker.

That's what my sump looks like...CO2 scrubber and skimmer container are just residing there but not in commission... few of the coral pics I had on my phone...
