I wanting to get all kinds of sps corals..I have a mag5 for return, and know I need for flow..if you were sitting up a 58gal tank, what type of equipment would you use?

I see some run a bare bottom...If I did a sand bed..how deep should it be

That depends on whether or not you want to use the sand bed for aesthetics or filtration.

I would think long and hard before you decide to put sand in though. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m currently in the process of siphoning out my DSB a little at a time and itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s not a fun process. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m not anti sand bed like some folks Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m just sick and tired of the tiny grains moving around. A fine grained DSB just does not allow me to run the flow patterns I want in my 58. I personally like the look of sand though and once itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s out and stabilized Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll probably put in a half inch or so of a much coarser sand.

My 58:
2 x 250w MH on 36" PFO parallel reflector, 2 x 96w VHO actinic
[Have run 10k, 14, 20k mix of MH] Might change one back to a 175, so I can run a longer photoperiod.
PM Bullet II skimmer w/ PCX-55, Blueline 30 return pump.
Tunze 6060 and Turbelle electronic, Seio 820.

I have a 60 gal cube (24x24x24) SPS BB
-250 watt PFO w/20k XM and Luminarc Reflector
-(2) Tunze 6060's (2) MJ1200 in tank
- Iwaki 30RLT return
-55 gal sump w/20 gal grow out
- ER 8-24 & ETSS 800 w/Iwaki 55RLT
-DIY calcium reactor
-kalk top-off

I plan on increasing PAR shortly by changing my bulb to a 10k.

I cooked all my LR for 4 moths befor setting up the system. I also have 100 ceriths and 100 astreas cleaning up after a few fish.

I'm part of the 58g club too.

2 x T-5's Aquablue Plus
1 x 250w MH - ROIII on Mag ballast 14k Phoenix
-Mag 9.5 return going through an OM Squirt
-GEO Kalk Reactor plus diy top-off system
-30g sump - Actual water volume in sump is closer to fifteen gallons
-ER 6-2+ skimmer
(Once or twice a week I will run a pair of Maxi-Jet 900's to stir up detritus)

Yup - this is tank is also bare bottom tank - otherwise I would have sand-storm every day of the week.

If this tank was going to be my only tank I would upgrade the lighting by adding another 250w mh.

My 58g

- 2x 250w (1 ushio 10K, 1 XM20k)...I find with the shorter tank, the bulbs blend together pretty well and give me a nice color.
- ASM G3 skimmer w/ gate valve mod, I skim pretty wet
- Mag9 return pump, have to throttle it back a little though
- Seio 1100 & 2 Seio 820's, still want more flow
- Ranco dual stage temp controller. With the MH on the smaller tank, I need to run fans during the photoperiod to keep the temp stable
- Phosban reactor
- 30 gallon rubbermaid sump
- lime water administered nightly via a peristatic dosing pump

I too run bare bottom. Primarily because it allows me to increase flow. This particular tank has been up about 10 months. Great growth, fair colors (a little faded at this point), no algae. Only one lost SPS since started, and that was due to my stupidity.

- DSB about 4-5 inches
- Two OM revolutions on the CL for extra random flow
- 6 hour photo period on MH and 12 hours on Actinic

Deciding on a Calcium reactor(Geo or MRC?) and chiller (1/5 hp or 1/4 hp?)

58 gallon barebottom (Starboard)

-1x 400 watt 10k BLV metal halide
-2x 96 watt VHO atinic
-Mag7 return pump
-ASM g3 skimmer with drain, recirculating and gate valve mods.
-Tunze stream 6100 w/ single controller
-seio 1500
-Koralin 1502 calcium reactor
-Arctica chiller plummed through return
-Coralife 25mg ozonizer (through skimmer)
-Tunze Osmolator (topoff) w/ calcium dispenser
-fan over tank
-Aquacontroller II w/ DC8.
-20 gallon glass sump

I run 4.5 hours MH and 12 hours VHO

I also have 2 serpent stars about 50 astrea snails and 1 fish.

Steve.

I also have a 58 now.

Lighting is a single 250 watt pfo mini pendent ( am adding anoughter soon)

I run a jetstream1 CA reactor, and a geo kalkreactor.

A medusa dual stage controller for heater/fans

A velocity T4 on a CL split returning through a 3/4" seaswirl and regular elbow return. A maxi jet 900 and seio 620 are also used.

Return is from a mag7 soon to be replaced by a eheim 1260.

Skimmer is a ER ES5-2 soon to be upgraded to a G3.

2" sandbed in the tank and small (10 gal) refugium in sump fro cheato which never seems to grow.

Steve small world! I am from Paoli.
