I have a fluval spec v 5 gallon tank with some dry rock and live sand. I know that I need to rinse out the tank and throw the sand out and filter. What about the dry rock how do I go about that? I was hoping to start the tank back up in a week.
I would get new dry rock while the old one gets nuked with chlorox. Then sit in FW . Then nuked in vinegar, then sit in FW. Then left out in sun for months. When ready to use soak in FW for a couple of weeks. Yes I am paranoid.
That's a shame, I really liked that dry rock. It's a really nice big piece. It was placed into the tank on Sunday. Will letting it dry for a week be sufficient? I thought no parasites(ich/brook) can survive out of water for a good amount of time?
Don't get rid of it . Like I said I am paranoid. I don't know how long something can survive if left to dry for a short period of time. The small nooks and crannies of dry or live rock may still hold some moisture even when it looks generally dry. It's hard for me to tell so I go overboard . Even then I am not sure if something still carries something or has a cyst still viable even after all I have done. I just put it in a crate and use it a year later. By then I have gotten over the fact that it was in a sick tank. Can u tell how much I hate the parasites that overcome such beautiful creatures.
I'm about to reset my 240g tank because of the same thing after many fallow attempts that went unsuccessful. I need to get the odds of success on my side so I've decided to get rid of the rock over 200lbs worth.
Well the dry rock that I want to keep is about 15 lbs and has holes drilled for frags. I would like to reuse it in the same 5 Gallon. Just want to know if a simple rinse/soak through tap water and air dry for a week will be sufficient enough to start it back up again in a week? I will be using new filter media and new live sand.
Also was wondering if draining all the salt water out of the tank and replacing it with rodi water and let it sit would kill whatever parasites In the tank? I know it will also kill the beneficial bacteria, although I can always use bacteria in a bottle to start it back up again when I start adding saltwater. Would this in theory work as well?
