Restarting an old 280 build

Kids coming over for Christmas tomorrow, thought I better at least clean the glass. I don't view the tank from this angle often enough looking down the length of the tank. It looks pretty nice I think. Taken from the cell phone :( I need a new camera for Christmas lol

In Australia so asked the wife to send a few photos since I have been here two weeks and just want to be sure everything back home is OK.

More not great photos but at least I can see everyone is fine and looks good:

Thanks, it has been nice since being from MN I got to miss their record setting lows, but even with high winds and blizzard like conditions I cannot wait to get back.

No I worked the entire time there this second visit. I was lucky to even get to watch a decent sunset. But with the record lows in our area I did enjoy the heat wave :)

Are they having record heat waves this year like they did last. I remember someone out there last "winter" saying that the mercury went over 120 which was a record as well as that they set a record of the number of days over 100 degrees. They were blaming it on hole in the ozone layer I think.

Not I, You can always put more clothes on the stay warm(er). But you can only take so much off =)

Actually in the heat you do not want to take that much off. Just keep it all loose. Look how the desert people dress in the Mid Eastern Deserts. To much exposure to the sun is deadly.

Well the new toy came in last weekend but my schedule would not let me do a lot with it until tonight. I have so much to learn. looking forward to taking a couple of club members up on their offer of beer for photography lessons :)

But here's what I took tonight that I thought came out decent enough to share.

I went with the Nikon D3200, with a Tamron 90mm macro lens.

That is basically the newer version of what I'm running (D5000) other than the lens being a 55-200. They supposedly improved the color balance on your newer model.

I nearly gave up on tank pictures with mine until someone told me to go into the menus and change the set the color balance to the highest possible K that the camera will allow. Then take the pictures to Photoshop and do an additional color balance to neutral gray using a point on the back ground rock that is normally appearing gray to your naked eye. Wow that improvement.

Still swamped at work so not a lot of time to play with the camera yet. A friend of mine gave me a coupon for some classes at camera exchange I will try to fit into the schedule when things slow down a bit.

I did play around some more tonight and chased my orange spotted filefish around and managed to get a few shots. I have had this guy since last July, he was in my seahorse tank until about a month ago when I decided to downsize by one tank and gave the seahorses to one of the local reefers to care for. My OSFF is in the same tank but with new tankmates and I was pretty nervous about how he would fair with actual competition for food.

His tank now houses a pair of black ice clown fish, a coral beauty and a flame fin tang. The new additions do not seem to bother him at all. he still eats pretty much anything I put in the tank.

It was not like that in the beginning though. he was a real tough sale on anything not brine shrimp. No matter what I put in the tank he would ignore it. So he was fed fortified brine shrimp soaked in selco, zoe, and garlic extract for months. But since this was my seahorse tank I added mysis shrimp in with the brine. The seahorses did not mind they would eat both. You could see my Orange spotted pick through the food and if he accidentally ate mysis he would spit it out and move on to the next piece of brine. That went on for a few months when he finally figured out the mysis was food too. Now there is nothing he won't eat. including formula 1 and 2 flake food.

Not much for coral in the tank a 92 cube. just a hammer a frogspawn and some GSP. I will probably make it a softy tank eventually. I did recently put a sacrificial frag of digitatas in the tank figuring he might ignore it. HE had it striped to the bone in about an hour. So he has not forgotten what his favorite food is lol.. But any how here is my chubby dude.

This is not much of an update but I am coming up on the 1 year anniversary of stocking the 280 and I did convert the seahorse tank to a softy tank a while back. The seahorses were donated to a good family that I knew would take great care of them. I don't know why but I just do not like many of the shots I have taken with my Nikon I know it's me and not the camera but all the same here are a couple bad shots of the two tanks. I will work on a better update later.
