Can anyone recommend a good point and shoot camera or camera period for reef photography? something with good white balance...

Looking good, and the pics are quite good as well.

I've seen a lot of good pics taken with Canon p&s cameras, and some of them have RAW mode support as well. I know someone who takes excellent pics and videos using a Canon PowerShot A4000 IS. Better than I can do with my DSLR, which proves it's mainly the camera operator that makes the good pics. :D

They don't really display the true color of everything quite as it appears in person.
I need a good camera that can pick up on the subtle colors the acros/montis have in them.

Update: 1-18-15

Unfortunately I lost my clam. Three days ago it started to expel mucus and shrivel internally, and the next day it was completely non reactive, shrunk inside its shell and the hermits were having a feast!

I believe this is simply due to the clam being so old and being removed from its natural habitat and not acclimating to aquarium life. RIP Mr. Maxima :(

On the bright side, I did pick up a few newbies today at the LFS and have a red/pink millipora/prostrata on the way:

Really crappy phone pics... I have GOT to get a good camera.
This maricultured colony is pretty much white with blue tips. I expect its bleached out a little from shipping stress and lighting but there is still visible tissue and it should make a recovery.

Another new maricultured colony, granulosa ? Bright blue tips, with a greenish base right now.

Update 1.26.15

Update 1.26.15

So, the red milli didn't end up coming in , well it did but it was very ****ed off and had bleached some so I forwent getting it.

I did pick up a nice Efflo wild colony the other day, however infected with AEFW!!!!!!!
NOOO!!!!!!!
I saw before releasing it into the display, so I did three extensive dips (pretty hard on it), as well as a scrapping of any exposed skeleton and removal of all egg masses, and used cyanoacrylic glue to seal any possibly infected looking areas, open areas, and the entire bottom and sides after removing some of the tissue.

We will see if my work was for nothing.
So far so good, no sign of the guys, continued dips, and the "bite marks" are healing.

Still no luck with bringing phosphates or nitrates up to any detectable level (via hanna). So I am just feeding every other day. 1/4tsp coral frenzy, 3ML oyster feast, mysis, brine, pellets, chorella flakes... etc...

Current tank perimeters are:
Salinity 1.026
pH 8.2
Temp: 77F
Alk: 8.0-9.0dKH (still finding what works best)
Ca: 425-475ppm
Mg: ~1400-1500
PO4: undetectable
NO3: undetectable

Here are some pics of tonight before a water change and a little rearranging.

Well,

So far Ive had the Mars Aqua 300W LED fixture on the tank now for a month and a half roughly.
Ive noticed an increase in color for sure, much more. and new growth is glowing.

I am installing the 2 new T5's and retro soon, within the next two weeks and am deciding on two T5 bulbs for supplement.

While this LED fixture has plenty of 450NM diodes, I was thinking of adding two Blue + bulbs on top of that.

Thoughts?

Has anyone used the ATI actinics? I know they are low on par but they are good at stimulating chlorophyll A&B.

I use ATI Actinics, but in an 8 tube combo on an ATI LED Powermodule.

If you were going to use 4 tubes I would have said go for 2xBlue+ and 2xactinics...

2zActinics will not change the overall spectrum much, but will add a bit of pop to the greens etc.

With a 2 tube supplement, I think the ATI Blue+ is hard to beat. Most everyone uses the ATI Blue+ as supplementals and they work great. The ATI Blue+ are great because they add a WIDE range of the blue-purple spectrum and have excellent PAR, so work really well to fill in the shadow areas left out when using LED's.

Thanks for your advice!
I already have a KZ Fiji purple , how does the Purple plus compare or does anyone know?

ATI Purple+

As you can see the Purple+ has: green, yellow, orange-red spectrum.

If you want to use this tube, place it at the back, and the Blue+ at the front. Its a good tube for popping the pinks/reds etc. No need to waste it. Use it for 10 months and then replace with something else if you want. :)

Thats useful,

however I was actually asking about the KZ fiji compared to the Purple plus LOL

Sorry was answering late at night and did a quick read.

KZ wants you to believe that the the FijiPink is something special, but it isnt; I have both tubes. They look identical. Also independent spectrometer tests carried out by Pacific Sun on a single sample size shows that the tubes are virtually the same.

Buy whichever is the cheapest. For most of us in the UK, ATI is a lot cheaper. They are also made in the same factory...not surprised that they are the same.

The first one is an awesome buy. The 2nd is nice, but hard to keep colour; it will requires lots of flow and light.

Keep us updated how they do. :)

Nice setup. I always admire a nice 40b build. Seems like 40b tanks don't get enough credit. Spectacular selection of fish and coral. Keep up the good work!

Ive had abrotanoides before and they are pains... but when you do get one to do well! WOW!
Ive got just the spot for it for now, directly under the leds and t5s being blasted by alternating random flow from the MP10 and return.

Thanks!
The newbies are due in within the next hour or so.

A day of mourning...

A day of mourning...

The past two days have seriously sucked!

I placed two orders for some newbies for the tank. One order was with a vender I have ordered from before in the past and lost everything. I chose to order again because its been years since I last did, and they had Helfrichis on sale... BAD IDEA.

First, when I received the package I immediately noticed that they were severely under packed, in a tiny box with little to no insulation. The water temp was 47 degrees! I left specific instructions when submitting the order to OVER pack and insulate due to the very cold weather and potential for delays.... They did not. Not to mention they also had an option to choose a freebie in my order which I did not receive...

A purple and Helfrichi and ORA bottlebrush acro DEAD!

SO UPSET!

Then my second order arrived, from a different more reputable vender with everything nicely packed and on time. Seemingly everything was fine. I drip acclimated my rainfordi goby and blue reef chromis and took great care in acclimating the abrotanoides and cytherea as well as dips...

The blue reef is eating fine, however the emaciated rainfordi was acting weird, dropped to the bottom of the tank and was breathing heavily for hours... at the end of the day: DEAD
DOAcourt.jpg

The abrotanoides RTNd in a matter of about 7 hours... NO doubt due to shipping stress and temp fluctuations.

THANKFULLY the cytherea is in very good condition and not necrosing

So upsetting!

Well, if this wasn't enough! This evening I was watching the tank and got up, went to use the restroom, came back and my red fire fish had jumped out and wad laying dead on the floor!!!!
This fire fish has been in the tank since I set it up practically and all of a sudden he decided to carpet surf? :(

Man this day has SUCKED!

A day of mourning cont...

After all of these losses I figured I'd snap some pictures of the LIVING.

Here are a few current pictures of the tank, with my iPhone, still need to find a good camera.

Wow sorry about your losses, I've been scared to order much due to the weather lately. Glad your Cytherea made the trip as it's a beauty, I lost one similar to a crash last year.
