return flow and power outage?

I want to put my return line a little deeper into my tank. Is there anything special I can do to it so that if the power goes out, it doesn't drain backwards and overflow my sump?

Thanks,
Laine

Assuming you are using pvc for the return line, drill a hole in the line about 3/4" under the water surface. This will cause a syphon break when the power goes out.

I use lockline with a Y ... one returns just under the surface, the other side of Y returns deep.

The hole in return works, but you must clean it out frequently.

Also try and angle the hole down a little. I drilled a hole in a return line once, that was angled up a little and after a water change when I turned the return pump back on, water shot out, up over the top of the front of the tank. Had to plug the hole and drill a new one.
