return plumbing Q's

I currently have a 120 with a single overflow in the left corner when viewing the tank, it has 3/4" loc-line at the end of the return into the tank with a wye going to two outlets but it only reaches about 8" into the tank.
I would like to use 3/4 pvc and run the return to the other side of the tank and have the outlet near my powerheads. My questions are...
Should I tee the end and have the water diffuse in two directions? or
Could I 90 the end and have it blow straight down to increase the flow behind my rock scape? or
Is there something different that others have done that makes a positive impact on the overall turnaround on the water IE.. filtered water having more time in the tank rather than just coming in and going right back out.
I currently have 2 koralia 4's as powerheads so I have decent flow I just feel like with the return so close to the overflow I have alot of just filtered water going back to the sump.
Any help is appreciated

I have the same tank. instead of extending the return I have an extra powerhead blowing across the back of the tank right by the glass pointed at the overflow box.

There are many ways to set up flow but if you want to see where the return flow is going before reaching the overflow, try to infuse some air into it and watch the path of the air bubbles. Not a perfect solution, but it'd give you an idea.

Thanks for the replys.
Blurry, the pvc I have laying around so its a cheap solution and I always like improving on the setup. Its kind of fun to me to mess around with it.
Mel, I usually feed thru the pump in the sump and the food seems to stay in the main tank so I could just be over thinking the whole thing.
I remember some time back Gary M. talked about the flow topic and was saying that having the return on the opposite end of the tank helped the whole process.

if food stays in the aquarium there might not be a problem- food can demonstrate flow patterns almost as well as bubbles.

Good aquarium (and swimming pool!) design has water flow pushing towards overflow/surface skimmer at surface.
