Return Pump Anomaly

I have a 10 year AGA Mega flow 180 gallon tank with a 75 gallon sump. I have a baldor sequence return external pump with an octopus with four lines that send the water back to the 180 gallon. Probably about 6 feet of head going up and up to five feet across on some of the returns. I noticed a loud sound from the pump this evening and sediment (wet sand) around the pump. I have no leaks of water otherwise. I have never cleaned the pump in 10 years (shame on me) and it has worked like a champ. I unplugged the pump and am waiting for the water to drain back down into the sump as it usually does in a power outage. I usually takes a couple minutes. For some reason I don't understand, water is still being pumped flowing from sump into aquarium for over two hours now. Yes, I made sure I unplugged the pump. I have no other way the water can return to the tank from the sump besides the line from the sequence pump. Good the suction possibly be pulling the water from the 75 sump and making all four return lines flow water? It is still strong flow without pump on. Or do I have a ghost in the house?

Do you have siphon breaks in the returns? Maybe somehow the multiple returns created some sort of cross nozzle siphon that pulled in one..and out another?

Otherwise..I got nuthin'

Most people only get 8-15 months on the sequence seals when using as a return pump with any head pressure at all.

Their seals are crappy.

People have found better seals for the hammerhead model and others. But you may need to start with Sequence/Reeflo to replace that seal.
