Return pump for 75 RR?

I upgraded to 75G RR tank with a corner overflow, im plumbing it with 1" pvc. My LFS recommended Mag950 as a return pump for this puppy.

Is there any special tricks to make sure the drain is quiet, i hear folks had some noise issues with big pipes...

What do you think?

i had a mag 7 for return on my 75 rr. personally i thought even that was to much flow coming out of that small nozzle. i had sand blowing everywhere and couldnt control it. (tried redirecting the flow into the rocks, ect. nothing worked) i'd go with a mag 5 if i ever did it again. only other option if you really want the big return pump is to put a T on the return so it devides the pressure up a little bit.

as far as noise goes. lol i don't care what anyone says theres just no such thing as a quite overflow. just get use to the noise. those durso's that come with the aga overflow kit work fine to damper the noise in the actual overflow, but there is still going to be alot of noise at the point where the water enters the sump due to air bubbles. another thing to make sure the overflow is as quite as possible is to make sure the durso is positioned at a height where the water falling from the overflow into the overflow chamber only falls about a 1/2in, so you dont get a "waterfall effect".

also, you said your plumbing in hard pvc. hard pvc is awesome in my opinion, but you may want to put a section of vinyl tubing on the return line to help dampen vibrations, since you said your concerned with sound. also try drilling 4 holes in the base of the mag pump, and attach two lengths of 1" vinyl tubing (with holes drilled through them as well) to the mag pump with zip ties.

I started with a Mag9.5 on my 75rr but that was too much flow. I needed two drain pipes just to keep up with the return pump. I then went with a Mag5 which worked great. However I eventually switched to an Eheim 1060, which is great. Either one will work.

About the overflows, check out the stockman standpipe or durso standpipe. Either one will help quiet the draining water.

mine came with Durso Standpipe...

u really think that mag5 will make enough flow? thats only 350gph @ 4 feet.

Mag9.5 is too big. A Mag5/7 is more appropriate. If you want a better, quiet pump, Eheim 1250 or a 1260 if you want stronger flow.

IMO, it really depends on the size of the sump.

If you are using a 36" long sump, you are OK with a Mag 9.5
But if you are using a 20 long or smaller, you may want to consider a Mag 7 or even a Mag 5 if it is a 10g-ish tank.

The biggest problem is microbubbles. You don't want to run too much flow through a small sump or it will have really bad microbubbles.

350gph is more than it sounds. you could also try a mag 7 with a ball valve on the return line.

That's what RC is all about! :D You get all the information spoon fed and then you get to pick. I'd go Mag7 or an Eheim 1260.
